Run flats to MPS4S - what size to order please?

Hi

Picking up my car tomorrow, f31, which has 19” wheels with run flats on. I want to swap these for pilot sports quickly.

Could someone advise me please on the appropriate size to order front and back?

I’d prefer ride comfort over performance so wonder what I could get away with

225 / 45 / 19 or 225 / 40 / 19?

Not sure what size rims come with the shadow edition F31 so if anyone can advise I’d be grateful so I can start checking prices.

Cheers

According to the inside of my door, these are the tyre sizes:

225/40/19 89 Y Front (& rear for square set up)
255/35/19 92 Y Rear

Thank you

What’s the advantage or disadvantage of the square set up?

I believe some owners with the xdrive system have had problems when using the staggered set up.

Other than that, I don't know if there were any advantages of a staggered vs square set up other then that the staggered will probably look better in terms of flushness with the arch.

It sounds like you intend to keep your stock wheels. I did that and replaced the runflats with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S which are just incredible. Consensus #1 Street summer tire right now! (Going to use the runflats as winter tires until they wear out.) I upgraded my tire size but I have 18" wheels so my knowledge wouldn't help you with your 19's.

I have a 335i got like for like in terms of fitment to stock, no issues what so ever.

Its completely changed the car from how it was with the Bridgestone RFT more comfortable and they way it handles is so much better!

Kept the pressure 38psi all round which seems to be fine.

If it were me, I would find out which size tyres it came with as standard (possibly still on ?) And then get the same sizes in ps4s

If you're not sure what the difference is between a square and staggered setup is, you're best off going and physically looking at your tyres to see what you've currently got fitted, then order the same. Due to the difference in wheel width, you can't choose which setup to go for without changing wheels.

Seen plenty of cars - including on here - where people have found the 'wrong' tyre sizes fitted to the car.

As one post has already said, check the door pillar and compare it to what is fitted.

Do you know the make of tyres fitted to the car at the moment? The only reason I ask is that by all accounts the latest Goodyear run-flats are actually quite good so if the car has those perhaps see how you find them before making a (presumably expensive!) change? I have conventional AS2's on my F31 335d and find them very good in terms of both performance and wear; if the run-flat equivalents are similar I'd look at my money twice before just ditching them for a set of Michelins (good as the MP4S's undoubtedly are!).

Less traction on the rear. Square tyres will fit on your staggered wheels, if you decide to go that route. Most wouldn't though, for non winter use.

Not so. 225 will fit on an 8.5" rim.

If you are changing they should be 225x40x19 fronts and 255x35x19 rears which are the standard BMW F31 19" tyre size.

Rims are 8"x19" front and 8.5"x19" rear and a shadow edition comes with 704M's

Goodyear eagles I think. I'm picking it up today so will maybe give it a day or so!

Thanks all

If it's on Goodyears I'd certainly give it a thousand miles or so to see what you think. As I say, a lot of people (including me) rate the conventional Eagle F1 Asymmetrics quite highly and, if the run-flat equivalent performs well (which is rumoured to be the case), I'm not sure I'd be rushing to incur costs to switch to the latest Michelins just yet!

Hope the collection goes smoothly!

Thanks all. I’m actually very impressed by the ride quality on the goodyear run flats the car has come with.

I’ve still put them up for sale though in the classifieds : )

You really don't need to go to the expense of PS4S's on your F31.
The PS4's will be more than adequate & offer substantial savings 👍

although the rim protector on the ps4s is probably worth any extra.

I'd probably prefer the ps4 I think for a tiny bit more comfort, but ordered the ps4s

Fear not... The PS4 has rim protection, just like the 4S.
I have some 4S's for the back of mine & have just fitted 'normal' 4's on my daughters car. They both have it.

really? I looked at the pics and they seem quite a bit different. PS4s stand quiet proud of the rim and Ps4 seemed almost flush.

I'd prefer the ps4 if they are the same rim protection but they don't appear to be

AFAIK, it's just an option when ordering the tyre. Like most, you can buy them with & without rim flange protection.
Just make sure you order the right one...
