Hitting the Rev Limiter
*Flame Suit On*
I was pulling out into traffic today and in first gear went deep into redline (), at least im assuming because my car cut power and I looked down and I was at around 7300 i think. I mean i would assume they would put the rev limiter low enough to prevent any damage. Anyway, I know im retarded, but how bad is this if bad at all?

Nothing to worry about... Unless you tend to do it everyday

Like every car it picks up as your RPM goes up. Each car just exellerates differently. You shouldn't be on first for long anyways.

Don't worry... as long as the engine is already warmed up, you can do it all day long.
Just don't do the money shift!

That's when the engine is mechanically over-revved past the electronic rev limiter (usually by accident of course!). You only have to worry about this if you're driving a MT... for example, wanting to downshift from 5 to 4, but in the rush, accidentally get it into 2.
Hopefully, if the error is caught fast enough, the valves and pistons don't encroach on each other.

I read somewhere (can't find the source) that a BMW engineer was quoted as saying "the engine can easily do 8000rpm without any modifications" so even if you hit the fuel cutoff (which is well below 8000rpm) there should be no issues. I wouldn't bounce the engine off the redline on purpose for extended periods of time, but your incident doesn't sound like a bit deal at all |

Good to go.
The first day I had my car I miss-shift a couple of times and shot the revs to 7K+. That was with less than 100 miles. Hey it was my first day learning a manual tranny. |

Just replace your piston return spring and you'll be good to go...
Seriously though, Hitting the rev limiter while accelerating is fine, you'll just look & feel like a noob, but that's what it's there for. However over-revving while down-shifting/decelerating, not so much. That's how you blow up your engine.
