I finally got amazon music to work in the BMW (m340i);
Android phone, no carplay or android auto

Wifi off in car settings, Phone plugged into USB
It might work via bluetooth, but didn't try.

Select (Samsung) A50 Phone from media source list
Run Amazon music on phone

Long press microphone button on steering wheel;
"Play the Bee Gees" acknowledged on car speaker and plays
Next song button works
Playlist request works

I doubt I would actually use it since it's streaming on my phone which would cost me $30 more per month if I go over my 1G data
SiriusXM for $60/year would be cheaper, though not as versatile.

But at least now I know how to make it work.

You can download songs locally to your phone with Amazon music too, if you're happy to use the space.
