X3 M40d First Thoughts

One week in, gave car its first wash this weekend.

Driving - drives pretty good, adaptive dampers keep it really flat in Sport. Super smooth delivery and loads of low down grunt. Not pushed it yet as decided to follow running in guidelines. But, from memory in my Audi bitdi, because most of the grunt is low down, it won't feel significantly faster even after run in. It isn't as fun as the low down 440i was on the Peak District twisties, but it's pretty good for an SUV. I actually like the noise piped in, it isn't even as obvious as it was in the 40i I test drove, which is odd, as it is all fake I suppose.

Interior - overall pretty good. Feels a nice place to sit, like the ambient lighting and digital dash the most. The digital dials have bits of metal added to give a bit more definition, which I like better than the newer version that has just landed at the dealers. One bad thing though, when you put into Sport, the dials change and the speedo one is really ugly. I want the comfort dials, which look really good, in Sport mode. Don't think that can be done though. Harmon Kardon is as expected from my last car, pretty good.

Exterior - it really needs the 718m's to arrive from the dealers that should have been on in the first place. It looks ok, bit mumfortable with the 20's, but it'll never be love from the outside. I like a bigger SUV, or a big saloon, but budget wouldn't stretch to that with the wife already having a Q7. I like some angles, I actually really like the cerium grey and the 718m's will give that a further lift too. I just think the back end looks a bit too narrow and nipped, and the front side windows are too deep and square looking, making it look less sporty and a bit like a greenhouse on top.

I've never yet owned a car that I love everything about, but overall this is pretty good, and it feels like a step up from the 440i in lots of ways. Happy with my decision so far, and when it gets the wheels I ordered, I'll be even happier. So, far I've managed to get an M Sport golf umbrella freebie thrown in, which is surprisingly good quality with rubberised and carbon looks. If they take too long, I'll be asking for more.

Nice write up thanks. Any reason wheels are taking so long to get?

Glad you are liking the car.

I have changed my speedo so that stays in comfort view when I'm sport. You can do it through the settings. Let me know if you can't find it.

I've had a quick look through and couldn't find it, any clues appreciated?

Not sure, had a bit of waffle that it takes a while for them to be shipped. Had confirmation that they've been ordered though, so be here soon I guess.

Im away from my car until Friday. Can give you exact instructions when I'm back.

But think it was through settings and instrument cluster option? If you are still struggling, I will give you details when I'm home.

Yes, definitely a factory order through parts, they've not got any just to swap from another car.

Weird that the same things happened with the Q7, now it's happened twice I'll be asking for pictures of the car prior to the collection each time.

Although in this case, probably worked out better as on the day they had no choice but to let me take the car with the wrong wheels on. I guess if they'd found out before they could have kept hold of it until they were changed.

Found it, exactly where I'd already looked! In the instrument panel display there's an individual setting, and you can uncheck a couple of items, which don't sound like they're anything to do with it, but are.

Cheers, without you telling me I wouldn't have found it and it would have annoyed me forever!

Nice that, I was tempted with one before I ordered my Merc but decided that I wanted to make my life more impractical than it already was!

Lovely colour and the bigger wheels will make a difference.

Rubbish Choice.

Wheels make a big difference aesthetically if you are keeping all the other cerium grey. It is a nice change from black.

Looks great, considering a detail, or I might just do something myself. Far from an experienced car washer, never mind detailer, but might apply something like chemical guys jetseal in an attempt to not let it end up like all my other cars.

That said, my last 5 cars have been black and hard to keep looking good. I thought about getting blue, but to me it's always the trend setting colour at launch and ends up too common in the end, so decided against it.

To be honest, there is a shockingly poor choice of colours.

Congrats on the new motor. Just in time for winter. Me and you and Teaspoon can form the fifth emergency service. (I'll do the towing as mine's the biggest).

Very nice, you can I think code the Alpina dials via bimmercode but that will just change the colour not sure about coding the comfort dials when in sport, although I prefer the sport dials myself.
