Need help deciding on the 2020 X5 40i
Hi all,
I have been reading this forum for sometime and have gotten a wealth of information. The most important being how to actually negotiate for a luxury car, as this will be my first one.Always thought luxury car dealers frowned upon customers trying to haggle over the price, well actually faced that situation last time I tried buying a BMW. Reading about all the 10% discount stories, allowed to me to approach the dealers for something similar with a lot more confidence this time around. After about a month of requesting for quotes, I have finally received one which comes close to 10%. Below is my build. My total MSRP with destination comes to $70,845. The dealer is willing to give $7000 discount before incentives. The total OTD price being quoted is $68,443.64 (includes tax (PA), title and fees). Do you guys feel this is a good deal on a 2020 40i or should I wait or try to get some more? I am still waiting for a quote from another dealer (famous on these forums) from MD. Also another question I had was, are the 2020 40is rolling off the production lines? All I have been reading about are people taking deliveries of M50is. Also someone in another thread was mentioning that no 2020 40is are currently being produced. So was just wondering if I order at the end of this month, how long is it gonna take to get the car. You're getting 10% off the MSRP. That's a good deal on a 2020. You're purchasing so MF don't matter. But 68k is good since it's after PA taxes.

That's a good deal on a 2020 order and you might be hard pressed to get more, unless there was a lease credit available which there are currently none. Ordering at the end of the month is a great approach as November rates will be available for you and hopefully the residual value goes up - currently it's -2% for 2020's since Sept.
Only comment on your build is upgrade to the 20" wheels! It's a $600 upgrade, also all-season and just looks better than the 19" As far as production, it's dependent on your dealer's allocation. If they're modifying an existing order assigned to them, then it could be around 4-6 weeks but it can take 8 weeks. Just be prepared to wait. I ordered mine back on 9/21 and it's still scheduled for production with estimated complete the week of Nov 10. Congrats on the discount and keep us posted!

My approach is - if you're happy with the final price it's a good deal.
Relatively speaking, 10% off is a good deal compared with what people have been reporting on this site. |

That looks like a good deal to me. I'd just recommend upgrading to the 20" wheels. You still get the a/s tires but they look a lot better on that big car imho.

If you’re getting 10% off MSRP before incentives, that’s a very good deal for a new 2020 order. The dealerships near me weren’t budging past 5% off MSRP. My X5 40i actually took a week and a half to build. I got lucky because my dealership already had an order into the factory and simply modified it to my preferences.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I too feel, that a 10% discount before incentives sounds good. I am planning on placing the order this coming week.
Regarding the suggestions about going with 20" wheels, the only reason I went with the 19" was because of my concerns regarding ride comfort. The back seats would be mostly for my kid or my parents, when they visit. Having never driven a car with air suspension, I was not sure how much impact they can have in smoothing the bumps out. Bumps that we do have aplenty in Northeast PA.If the air suspension works as intended, I am for the 20" setup.I agree, it suits the car a lot better. Another concern that just popped up today was a mail from the MD dealer that mentioned BMW is no longer making X5s with 3rd row option. The dealer I am planning on placing the order with didn't mention it. I remember that with 2019 models, for sometime earlier this year, the option was removed from the configurator and if I am not mistaken, the order guides as well. However, with the 2020, the option is available in both the places. I have asked for a confirmation from my dealer as well. But has anyone ordered and/or taken delivery of a 2020 with 3rd row? |

Thanks all. So I have decided to pull the trigger today and go ahead and place the order. However, the CA is saying to put a $2500 non-refundable deposit. I was under the impression, that when taking delivery, if we find issues with the car, we can reject taking delivery. Just wanted to confirm if the deposit is truly non-refundable?

Non-refundable deposit is, IMO, sketchy. I had an HD dealer try that on me once, I walked and it was only $500.
Unless you're ordering something truly bizarre that he doesn't want to be completely stuck with? |

I spoke with the CA and she agreed, a $500 deposit is good enough to get an order placed. I don't think the build is crazy, but according to her, since it is a custom build, they call it a non-refundable deposit, because it is a car they wouldn't normally order. However, I made it clear to her that when I take delivery, if I find that there are issues with the car or if it doesn't entirely meet my build, I will be free to refuse the car and get the deposit back. They agreed to it.Working with her on the order. Hopefully it goes through today. Just need to make sure everything is in writing.

Finally, after battling my mind I have decided to go with my heart and placed the order for 2020 X5 40i. Brain kept saying buy something cheaper and bank the difference, whereas heart said, you wanted it for the longest time, get over your worries about German car horror stories and get it. Encouraged by the good/bad, though honest experiences of all folks on here, I decided to take the plunge.
Now the hardest part begins. Waiting for it. It is a mix of nervous anticipation and excitement. Question I had was, how do you guys track your order? I have the production number and the status I received from the CA is 112. The other thing I wanted to know was the BMWCCA rebate. Is that still available and if so, should I register now or do I need to wait for the VIN# to be assigned? |

You will need to sign up for a three year BMWCCA membership prior to signing the paperwork for your car. They even usually give a 15 day grace period but no sense in waiting. Once you have all of the paperwork for the vehicle then you can fill out the application online. |

Browse to mygarage.bmwusa.com to track your build using your production number or VIN. First time on that page you will have to create an account.
Or you can call 800-831-1117 and follow the automated prompts to track your build. |

I didn't realize this was your first BMW. Something about the way you provide detailed explanations to questions from people and step by step guide, made me believe you were a BMW veteran. |
