Anyone cross shopped an X3M and an M5?
I had a 2014 M5 and enjoyed it but I have a 17 X5M and driving an SUV has been remarkably fun.
Anyone shopped the M5 vs the X3M? I did a search and didn't see a thread on this. |

One of those was my thread.
Well if you are buying new the price difference is night and day, but if you are leasing and especially if looking at Demo M5s it becomes a lot closer in price (2019 Demo M5s are a huge bargain right now). Having said that, I was looking at a white/black M5 vs a Gray/red X3M, the X3M just looked so much more appealing (less boring) to me, was about $150/month less (M5 would have been under $1000/month though) and I really just don't want to deal with the extra length, under 190" is what I like (both driving and parking/garage reasons). X3M is quicker than I will ever need, faster than my M3 was with way better traction and smoother ride. M5 would just be overkill and to me wasn't really worth the extra money (only people who go in my back seat are my kids, X3M has plenty of space for them and cargo for all their sports stuff and my clubs). |

These are both on my short list, but I'm very likely to order a X3M for a couple of reasons - size and all-weather capability without having to use dedicated snow tires. While I'd like the faster vehicle, practical considerations argue in favor of the X3M.

When I was looking at the X3M Comp, I considered the F90 but at the time my local dealer was quoting $2K per month leases on the M5's and $1400 for the X3Ms...which was laughable.
No local dealers or even dealers close by had any M5's. However, they did have an X3M Comp that they gave me a killer deal on (good trade, etc). $1050 with only the first payment due. For almost double the price the M5 was not worth it to me. Now I am seeing people getting $1100-$1200 for 2019 leftover M5s.

Just remember they don't come with all season tires, so its not really all-weather capable unless you throw all seasons on like a few have done.

What about the 2020 M550i ???
That would be a far more likely cross-shop scenario, and the exact comparison I'm currently making. The spread on my configured cars is only about $7k, far less than the $30k-ish spread between the X3M and the M5. Having a toy in the garage for weekends means I'm not solely focused on outright performance for a daily driver, but more on comfort. The M550i has 553 lb.ft. @ 1800 rpm (vs the X3M's 442 @ 2600 rpm) a vastly lower center of gravity, and weighs almost 200 lbs. less (not to mention more hp). I can't think of a scenario would the X3M would outperform an M550i, let alone an M5. I guess for most, as mentioned, it boils down to utility, outward visibility, etc., but for someone like me, who lives in Detroit (worst roads in the universe) and doesn't need a vast amount of storage space, when you take into consideration things like ride quality and a 45 mile daily commute, the M550 is the no-brianer. |

I’ve owned both. Totally different rides. Totally. If the Porsche Turbo S did not exist I’d still own the M5 teamed with the X3MC. M5 is awesome and is in the zip code of the Turbo S, but not quite there.
X3MC is awesome for a SAV. Better than my beloved F85 and I REALLY liked that ride. IMHO the M5 is the best Saloon car on the planet. The X3MC is the best SAV under $100k. M5 is more comfortable and has killer leather everywhere (optioned). M5 is 1/2 second quicker in the 1/4 and the V8TT sounds awesome with minimal mods. But it has a trunk. Utility wise , SAV rules. Truly comes down to sedan vs SAV. Both are extremely fun to drive. |

M550xi isn't a bad suggestion actually. Probably faster than an X3M until tuned and more comfortable I'm sure.

The M550i, while faster than the last-gen M5, feels very different from a M vehicle. Steering is much lighter and suspension/control is not as sport-centric. I'd test drive it back-to-back with whichever M vehicle you'd also be considering, to make sure you'd find it an acceptable alternative.

I just test drove them back to back 30 minutes ago. The X3M is a riot to drive, but felt much more high strung relative to the M5. Ride was stiffer (not uncomfortable) and it did not feel as planted. Cornered really well and was fun in the turns.
The M5 though, what a car. I have owned several M cars including an F10 M5 and F80 M4 and they knocked it out of the park with the new F90. Where the F10 felt like a high powered pig, the F90 feels perfectly balanced on a back road. Yes, it is a big car, but it drives smaller than it is. I felt instantly comfortable even at speed on a narrow, off camber downhill corners at speed. The limits feel very approachable and the whole car feels very natural. You can't go wrong with either one, but the deals on the M5's are crazy right now. My dealer has a lot of 2019's to choose from and my lease quote was around $1250 on at $125K car. It is a lot of car for that price. |

Got any leads? I was not considering that since it was going to be much higher lease price than the X3M -- but if that's the case, it will be nearly identical.
