Don’t you need to send it back to them to have it recalibrated and setup for the correct engine? How is it working? I have one for my M5 and was going to reach out to them and see if I need to send it back to have it reprogrammed

I'm tempted to pick one of these up. Any real risk to getting one?

Looks like a pretty easy way to boost my 50i to 500hp...

Their tunes are generally regarded as more conservative than others. I had one on my 2019 M5 and it was great! Night and day difference and never had any issues with it. Just traded it in yesterday for X7 M50i and I’m going to add one once I get it broken in

F90, if you don’t mind me asking, why did you go from M5 to X7? I am switching from X6M for X7 and am wondering if I miss the power... I don't have any experience with the chips and would consider it as long as the warranty is not void.

I believe anything that modifies the engine specs such as chipping will void the warranty. Probably not a big deal if your only leasing for 3 years.

I actually went from 2018 X6M to ‘19 M5 and now to X7 M50i. Loved the X6M and had it tuned plus exhaust plus intake and it was a lot of fun and then the M5 was a game changer and a rocket. I loved the M5 and would have kept it but had an issue at dealer. They changed oil and forgot to torque the oil drain plug. Two days later, it worked itself free from pressure and all the oil drained out and Kaboom! Dealer was great and filed insurance claim, replaced the engine and sold me the X7 at cost after making me whole and getting me back what I paid for the M5 a year later. BMW NA also kicked in and helped so it was a great overall result and the X7 is a more practical vehicle for our current family with three kids in sports. Also tows the boat so I don’t have to keep swapping with my wife’s SUV!

Really happy with so far and it drives much better than expected. Fees much smaller and more nimble than I was expecting. Nothing like my wife’s Escalade. That drives much more like a big boat and feels huge and sluggish

If this is just a piggyback chip though, when you pull it off before bringing it in to the dealer, can they even tell you used it? If it’s not detectable, then the dealer should never know, right?

Your comment is true in that the dealer would never know if you did this but if you end up having major component failure, bent rod, blown engine, etc. BMW will certainly investigate further and they can go back thru the ECU in detail and see what boost levels were at and analyze any variables outside of their normal specifications. My advisor, who is also the Dinan and performance specialist, has told me that most factory BMWs are tuned 30-40% lower than what their components are capable of handling at maximum horsepower levels

The real key is to either go with a reputable and more conservative tune such as Racechip, Dinan and a few others. While these are not achieving the maximum horsepower gains, they are still significant and noticeable. Dinan ever offers full warranty protection that matches the full BMW warranty if something fails as a result of their piggyback or tune. They are also generally a little more expensive than ones like Racechip. I have had good luck with both Dinan and Racechip. On my M5, the Racechip alone shaved off 3-4 1/10ths of a second off 0-60 time and was a very noticeable increase in mid-range torque and acceleration.

There are plenty of others that people that like such at JB4/Burger Tuning, etc. that give you more HP gains but you just need to be more careful as it relates to which tune maps you run and what type of gas you use.

After break-in, I’m going to probably start with my previous Racechip and send it in to be Re-Programned for M50i engine. Hope this helps explain a little better.

When it comes to tunes, nothing is perfectly safe or undetectable and you have to go into with those expectations. The key is getting a good service advisor and dealer that promotes Dinan or is tune friendly as it always makes things a little easier if something happens. I have always gone a little more conservative with the tunes and not chose the most aggressive ones and have had good luck on my last 4 BMWs.

Great thanks.

Ordered the Racechip RS. I figure 500hp is plenty.... hoping install isn’t too difficult.

Out of curiosity, have you confirmed they have a chip/program specifically for the X7 M50i? On the order page, they're only showing chips for the X7 40i and 50i but the not the M50i.

Not yet but it is the same engine as all the other M50i engines from the M850, M550, X6 M50i, etc. I have the GTS from my M5 and that is the one I would go for again. Very simple to install. Could install it or take it out in less than 5 minutes on M5 and it should be same on X7. The nice part about it is there are 7 different maps. I used to run between 5-7 depending on situation. Difference between maps 5-7 was definitely noticeable but not not and day

I'd actually sent an email to RaceChip's support the other day — to ask specifically if the chip for the X5 M50i would also work for the X7 M50i — and just finally heard back today:

Quote:
Unfortunately we do not offer any chip tuning for your vehicle yet. However, we are constantly expanding our model range and will gladly inform you by e-mail as soon as a product is available for your vehicle.

The development process can take a few months before a RaceChip is released to assure you maximum performance and a safe drive. We appreciate your understanding since we cannot provide an estimated release date.
If accurate, that's a bummer. I wonder what the difference could be. Or maybe he was just trying to blow me off.

I don't think this is correct because I just sent my RaceChip from my F90 M5 back to Ben at RG Sportshop yesterday because he reached out to them and they confirmed it was the same chip as the X5/X6/850 M50i engines and he was going to have it recalibrated. He did say that the chip has to be reprogrammed from the F90 M5 and not to just plug it into the X7 and use it because the M5 tune is more aggressive because the engine internals are much stronger and can handle more power. I believe Ben sells more Racechips than any other vendor.

There was also another user on here that said he just took the Racechip from his X5M and plugged it into his X7. While that would work in theory, it seems that would be very dangerous as it would potentially be putting out too much power. The Racechip is supposed to only add around 49HP on the X7 M50i, whereas the M5 Racechip added much more. I'l let Ben comment on that if he sees this thread.

I work closely with RaceChip.
So, I talk to the upper management directly both in the US and Germany.

It is confirmed that they have it for M50i.

I have installed 1 for my local customer with X7 50i that used to own F90 M5 too.
Installation is not that hard. I have pictures already. Just need to find time to make the DIY.

I will create a thread on the DIY once I have them made.

Ben,

Thanks for replying. Can you confirm that the Racechip for the F90 M5 or X6M/X5M are not compatible directly for the X7 M50i even though the harness may plug and play and would need to be reprogrammed first? You mentioned to me on the phone that those Racechips provide more power because the internals in true M cars are stronger and rated to handle more power.

I ask because the original user that posted said that he just plug and played his old one from his X5M vehicle

Each different engine variant, it uses different mapping software.
Unless if it cross platform such as G05 X5, G06 X6, G07 X7 M50i.

I am not sure why OP just moved it to different car without having it reprogrammed.
Unless if he had it done already. OP didn't stated clearly whether he reprogrammed it or not.

RaceChip able to push more gain on the M Cars due to its internal components quality and capability.

Got mine in today for my 50i. No idea how to install it. The instructions don’t show pics of this vehicle — they’re pretty poor. So any guidance welcomed

Thanks.
