Deals ordering vs. Deals on the lot
I’m wondering how the deals compare on buying the car they have on the lot versus ordering one. I’m in the Chicago area and thinking of buying a 2020 X3 M40i and ones I’ve seen around are not spec’d how I’d like it, and I wouldn’t mind ordering one so it can come right after the shittiest weather. I’ve been reading here about great deals like 10–15% off, and wondered if, heading to a local dealer end of this month or next month, if they still might want to sell bad enough to give that sort of a deal on an ordered car?

I felt like I had way less leverage when I discussed ordering.
In the end, I bought one off the lot on last day of the month. It really does help. I got the amazing deal off the lot because I walked away when they almost laughed at my proposal (close to 10k off with incentives). They said they would never sell it for that and someone will come to buy it at their asking price soon ($3k off MSRP). Anyway. They called me weeks later on the 30th and offered to take my deal if I close by the 31st. They needed to move 2-3 more cars before the month ended. I live in a region with low supply and high demand (only 2 dealers in a large metro area). So they are hard to work with if you want a deal regardless. But I think it holds true anywhere that you will get a better deal off the lot. |

Two years ago I special ordered a 2017 Ford Expedition King Ranch edition...the only deal I got was what Ford had going on nationwide. Which is the bad news, but the good news, I did not get a truck with stuff I did not want

I've ordered my last 2 BMWs and got the same deal, which I thought was fair. $500 over invoice, plus any loyalty or other discounts that were available. I ended up around 8-9% off on my custom orders (also, they gave me really good offers on my trade ins). Probably could have done better with off the lot, but like you, they never have a vehicle close enough to what I want to tempt me to go that route.

My client advisor offered me the same deal for ordering as he did with a car that was already built. Granted, I walked into the dealership at the start of the month and they only had a couple 2020 M40i available. He said that he gave me such an amazing deal that he couldn't even give me a set of rubber mats like he usually does. The MSRP of my build was around $64k, the incentives totaled $4k and he gave me around $4500 in dealer discounts.

I feel like buying cars on the lot is a compromise to a certain degree unless options don't mean much to you. having said that, ordering is a plus because you won't waste money on something you don't need/want. That's considered a saving for me. Find a good dealer/sales who doesn't push you to buy something on the lot if you don't find something you like. Dealer/sales deserves to make fair amount of profit if they spend the time with you to get what you want. Consumer needs to understand that.

I bought my car off the lot after negotiating the price of a package that was the car + 7 years total warranty + 7 year total maintenance. Got a terrific deal. When I tried to order, they refused to even discuss buying the three things as a package. Yet, the major savings to be had are on the extended warranty and prepaid maintenance. Of course, if you plan to keep the car for 3 or 4 years, then it will make little difference.

I feel that if you are spending $60K+ on a car, you should get what you want and not to settle. Ordering is the way to go unless a dealer has exactly what you want on the lot. When I was shopping around for my X3, there were some dealers who wouldn't offer deals on build orders, so you will need to shop around. Obviously if you are not as picky, then you will probably get a better deal on a vehicle that's been sitting on the lot for awhile.

Thanks guys, great info. This will be my first BMW so I won’t get the loyalty discount, but will push for a good deal on everything else and on my trade.

Looking at a USED 2019 X3 xDrive30i AWD for the better half in Silver/Black pretty loaded with 4700 miles, so NOT Certified. Pricing:
MSRP = $55620 Dealer Asking Price = $52,852 (a joke, IMO) Was going to offer $44,500. Basically, the 20% off number used since the dawn of time that people would say "once you drive off the lot, it depreciates...". Have a trade, as well, and haven't checked incentives yet. Any thoughts?
