Deals ordering vs. Deals on the lot

I’m wondering how the deals compare on buying the car they have on the lot versus ordering one. I’m in the Chicago area and thinking of buying a 2020 X3 M40i and ones I’ve seen around are not spec’d how I’d like it, and I wouldn’t mind ordering one so it can come right after the shittiest weather. I’ve been reading here about great deals like 10–15% off, and wondered if, heading to a local dealer end of this month or next month, if they still might want to sell bad enough to give that sort of a deal on an ordered car?

I felt like I had way less leverage when I discussed ordering.

In the end, I bought one off the lot on last day of the month. It really does help.

I got the amazing deal off the lot because I walked away when they almost laughed at my proposal (close to 10k off with incentives). They said they would never sell it for that and someone will come to buy it at their asking price soon ($3k off MSRP).

Anyway. They called me weeks later on the 30th and offered to take my deal if I close by the 31st. They needed to move 2-3 more cars before the month ended.

I live in a region with low supply and high demand (only 2 dealers in a large metro area). So they are hard to work with if you want a deal regardless. But I think it holds true anywhere that you will get a better deal off the lot.

Two years ago I special ordered a 2017 Ford Expedition King Ranch edition...the only deal I got was what Ford had going on nationwide. Which is the bad news, but the good news, I did not get a truck with stuff I did not want

I've ordered my last 2 BMWs and got the same deal, which I thought was fair. $500 over invoice, plus any loyalty or other discounts that were available. I ended up around 8-9% off on my custom orders (also, they gave me really good offers on my trade ins). Probably could have done better with off the lot, but like you, they never have a vehicle close enough to what I want to tempt me to go that route.

My client advisor offered me the same deal for ordering as he did with a car that was already built. Granted, I walked into the dealership at the start of the month and they only had a couple 2020 M40i available. He said that he gave me such an amazing deal that he couldn't even give me a set of rubber mats like he usually does. The MSRP of my build was around $64k, the incentives totaled $4k and he gave me around $4500 in dealer discounts.

Most of those 10% + deals were on 2019's. I have been special ordering all my Bmw's from the same dealer for over 12 years. I always special order. I always want the car I want built exactly to my specs. Why settle? I usually pay invoice less all incentives. This time I did a little better . I just ordered a X4M40i. Incentives were $3000 for loyalty and lease credit plus a little over $5000 off sticker. MSRP was $69000. The only issue you have is how fast the cars from South Carolina get to your dealer. Check with your dealer but if you want it after the winter do not order before late February. My dealer says he can get the X3 and X4's in as little as 3 weeks

I feel like buying cars on the lot is a compromise to a certain degree unless options don't mean much to you. having said that, ordering is a plus because you won't waste money on something you don't need/want. That's considered a saving for me. Find a good dealer/sales who doesn't push you to buy something on the lot if you don't find something you like. Dealer/sales deserves to make fair amount of profit if they spend the time with you to get what you want. Consumer needs to understand that.

thoughts on this deal?

I am about to place a build order for a 2020 X3 xdrive.

60,365 MSRP

Discounts - 6,000 dealer, 1,500 loyalty, 2,500 financing

overall this comes to 10K discount of around 16.5% for a total of 50,365 plus tax and tags

Can this deal be beat? If yes, how much more? thoughts?

thanks!

The problem is 98 percent of car dealer sales folks are clueless on what they sell. Shame on the dealership for not training them on the product they sell. I never find them authentic and always seem to be full of themselves. Maybe that's just cause it's the tri state of NY. I can't wait till AI and machine learning rid the car salesman—I don't know a single person that finds going into a dealership to buy a pleasant experience. The dealership model will be gone in the future. But that will be a while but is in lockstep with autonomous electric cars being mainstream.

That looks very good...I got about 8.1K off 50.9K MSRP order including same incentives...but my trade was valued about 2K more than elsewhere.

The last 3 X's (X3, X5, X3) Ive ordered over the past few years all arrived within 10 days. I think the X5 was more like 7 days.

And yes, similar to others', Ive been offered the same deal on the lot or order. Recently however they offered a larger discount on an X7 on the lot.

I go to my dealer with the exact build that I want, and I get a decent deal, depending of course on time of year (later is better). I do not consider my CA to be clueless; in fact he is pretty knowledgeable, as was his predecessor. But it always helps to be knowledgeable yourself and when spending the $$$ for a BMW, my philosophy is get exactly what you want, not what somebody else thought you might want. It takes longer, especially when it is coming from Germany but then you can have some fun tracking it from the factory. I made an exception for my X3 30x because it was a '19 demo and it had what I wanted at a nice price -- and it is not my primary car.

I am always satisfied with the deal I have received. One of the reasons my CA is giving me such a good deal is because I make his job very easy. I get the ordering or price guide from him, spend alot of time building exactly what I want, and hand him a copy of my build. He figures out the price and he knows that I know the invoice and he verifies the incentives. I don't call him daily as some people do, but he always answers my emails or phone calls. I am happy and he can devote his time trying to sell to someone less knowledgable that need to spend hours with him. If I spend 20 minutes with him the day I place the order it is alot.

I bought my car off the lot after negotiating the price of a package that was the car + 7 years total warranty + 7 year total maintenance. Got a terrific deal. When I tried to order, they refused to even discuss buying the three things as a package. Yet, the major savings to be had are on the extended warranty and prepaid maintenance. Of course, if you plan to keep the car for 3 or 4 years, then it will make little difference.

That is a really good deal. That's gotta be less than invoice...

I feel that if you are spending $60K+ on a car, you should get what you want and not to settle. Ordering is the way to go unless a dealer has exactly what you want on the lot. When I was shopping around for my X3, there were some dealers who wouldn't offer deals on build orders, so you will need to shop around. Obviously if you are not as picky, then you will probably get a better deal on a vehicle that's been sitting on the lot for awhile.

Thanks guys, great info. This will be my first BMW so I won’t get the loyalty discount, but will push for a good deal on everything else and on my trade.

Looking at a USED 2019 X3 xDrive30i AWD for the better half in Silver/Black pretty loaded with 4700 miles, so NOT Certified. Pricing:

MSRP = $55620

Dealer Asking Price = $52,852 (a joke, IMO)

Was going to offer $44,500. Basically, the 20% off number used since the dawn of time that people would say "once you drive off the lot, it depreciates...".

Have a trade, as well, and haven't checked incentives yet.

Any thoughts?

I just got a 2019 retired service loaner with same amount of miles for $46,500 but mine is an X3 M40i! it had an original MSRP of $59,000 so just about 21% off. Killer deal.

I also am in Chicago. Am ordering my 2020 X3 M4.0 today. Had to shop hard at five different dealers( 2 out of state) to find out what the bottom lines are and if my exact car could be found anywhere. Not a one in the country. So, after tough negotiations ( business is business) got my $63,850 MSRP out the door for 59k even, or 54,500 before tax, title etc, etc. I believe better to negotiate OTD price to avoid add ons they sneak in, misunderstandings, and to know your real cost. This time of year is good, because they want to deliver by end of year so they can cash in on their dealer incentives for 2019. Takes about a month for delivery. Hope that helps.

Great, thanks for that info, that seems like a decent deal for sure. So do you think they gave that deal to you because you got the order in by year end, or because they should be able to DELIVER the car by year end? Does that matter to them? Or is an order on the books still good for them by year end? I’m pretty sure I will order, and hoping to delay it as long as possible so I get it with just a little bit of winter left. My trade is decent so I don’t mind using it for a few more months.
