Tyre slip

Anyone else notice in the cold and wet that the tyres slip a lot when pulling out of t junctions etc

Seems odd in a car with 4WD and fairly limited low end torque.

Maybe it's the tyres - not bad it before.

Yes I’ve had this on other AWD cars on junctions in wet weather, maybe something to do with road surface, tyres and overall car setup, power etc...

My current M50d does not do it but I noticed on my X3M test drive it did this on a junction where my previous RS3 did the same.

Probably not the best answer to your question but overall yes I have experienced this as well.

You have to take it easy in an M car when the weathers not great, they're not like normal BMWs they can and will bite AWD or not.

I wonder if the X3/4M has attracted quite a few buyers that haven't had M cars before, I predict a few posts about "black ice" as it's always black ice isn't it....

What temperature and what tires do you have on the car. If the stock summer tires, then they will naturally not work well in the cold and can actually be quite dangerous under 40 degrees Fahrenheit/4.5 Celsius.

I've noticed this too. It does this even with very modest gas and as you point out the lack of low rpm torque means this make even less sense. It's almost like there is a momentary delay before traction control kicks in... My more powerful Quattro never did this so maybe it's just a feature - it's only momentary. Under serious gas I've noticed this car is much more RWD biased than the Audi and i have to say I have been having more fun as a result !
Are you on Conti tyres? That what I have (was hoping for MPSS). Tyre pressures even.

When I pull away from my house if I hit the gas a bit too hard I get some slip. But haven't noticed it otherwise when pulling away from a light or stop sign. But yea. Its November here in the states. Temps are cooler and the ground is damp. One should expect it even if you were driving a Honda Civic (no offense civic drivers)

I’ve noticed this as well. I haven’t checked the pressures yet. I also wandered if the traction control was interfering upon any initial slippage and made it feel worse. Sounds odd but I often switched off the traction on previous M3 and M140i sometimes if it was wet as the traction caused a similar effect and it drove smoother with it off. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was just cold tyres though.

Is this just a case of less intrusive traction control perhaps and the car has a more rear driven bias AWD?

Summers are useless in colder temps. Even in dry conditions, tire compound gets hard so handling and traction are very poor.

How did it take 5 posts before this? This is the only question that matters and without the answer OP is on his own.

I think there is a massive information deficit amongst drivers. Based on anecdotal evidence, a good number of people seem to think if it is dry, summer tires will do just fine in the cold. I think manufacturers who supply cars with summer tires should do a better job of informing customers of the dangers (i.e., a warning in no uncertain terms that driving below a certain temperature is dangerous - and this warning should not be tucked away in the manual, it should be somewhere prominent).

Pretty sure the X3m is rwd until it loses traction then moves power to the front.

My GTR-R35 was the very same. Rwd until it needed to send power to the front. Made it fun to drive but a bit scary at the same time. If you look on YouTube there are loads of gtr crashes due to this.

This type of setup requires caution in all conditions.

X3M is constant awd, in mdm mode its rear wheel bias but still awd.

Where have you read anything to the contrary? It's a rear biased AWD system.

Several sources in fact, the most important being BMW itself. See F97/F98 Technical Manual Sec. 4.3.

To answer a few points and add some context.

I realise they're summer tyres, this is not the issue regardless of temp. My previous RWD 440i was running 400+ bhp in MP4S's and I didn't have this Issue nor do I have it in my C63 on Yoko's and 457bhp.

This is a trait of the car. It's only with light throttle and it's irritating- get moving and it's fine - no slip at all even under full acceleration.

I'll try reducing the tyre pressures by 2 psi and see how that plays out.

Yes on Conti's. They will be changed to either MP4S's or the new Hankook tyres that come on the new RSQ8, but I need to read some reviews on them first.
