Help in deciding to pursue this 335d
Hi all, I've been looking to get this 335d for sale. It comes fully deleted and tuned. My question is, do you guys thing I should get it? I am an 18 year old who works at GeekSquad of Bestbuy so i make about $750 a month. I dont really need to worry about college since I've gotten a full ride scholarship. Do you guys thing I can afford a $250 car payment? I am a TINY bit mechanically inclined and can follow diy like a hawk. I've been wanting this car for the past 3 years and have litterally made a whole list of probable repairs. Going to do harmonic balancer, belts, water pump, and thermostat, vacuum lines, and pressure converters when I get the car immediately. Other than that, do you think I'd be able to afford it? After those immediate maintaince tasks, I'd have about $1,000 in reserve in a compound interest savings in case of some catastrophic failure. Is my dream achieveable? The car is 10,500 and I am taking a loan of $11,000 with a monthly payment of $250 a month (minimum is $213 but I want to pay more). This is the first time I am ever posting on this site so spare me if I am posting in wrong thread or something.

Nope. Get something cheap and reliable (Honda/Toyota, etc) until you can afford to run a performance car.
Not sure exactly what the costs would be for you, but here a pair of rear tyres are £250. And any one of the many parts which could fail will quickly add up to way more than that. If nothing went wrong, you'd be fine. If anything went wrong, you'd need to eat into savings or go without your car for a few months. It's just not worth the risk. Live to your means. |

If you're in school do you really need a car? Or are you just dying to flex a BMW? Last edited by Volasko; 02-04-2020 at 07:19 AM.. |

If you like it get it.. I always bought beaters (~$1000) out right until I was 35.. They were throw aways and I usually got most of money back out of them with departure.. To each there own and take advice lightly...

Because you can't afford to fix the car, buy food and have a girlfriend on $750 a month. Plus fuel and any of the other things you might want as an 18 year old.
That's my opinion, however, I'm not one for practicality, so go for it. |

Yeah I'm having a hard time imagining living with 750$ a month with a 335d when you have to pay for food for you plus someone else. |

The insurance alone would suck.

A 335d is not a good first car to learn your BMW mechanical skills on. A more financially responsible option would be an E90 or E92 with the sport package and the N52 engine. Swap out the intake for a 3 stage disa one, flash the ECU with the free bimmerlabs software and get 255 hp.

Lexani LX20. Apparently they are owned by Nexen or something. I plan on doing brake distance tests this summer to know how bad they are in. But for spirited driving they have not let me down, they stick well in curves. |

The parts you said you are going to change immediately amount to almost $1k alone in parts...the harmonic balancer is $500...where is this money coming from? You also stated that you cant wrench on cars, so that means you need a mechanic to do that. You are looking at a $10.5k car purchase and then turning around and putting another $2k into it immediately. Also, a turbo car for insurance for an 18 year old is going to be ridiculous.
Buy a 330i or a 328i if you want a BMW. Idk what you have been reading, but it will be much more reliable and cheaper for you to maintain than a 335. Better yet, buy a toyota or something. But, it seems like you have made up your mind and you made this thread for justification. I hope you have a decent savings because stuff will break because its a BMW. |

Let's do a bit of quick math; To get to school and work you travel 60 miles/day, the 335D roughly averages 30 miles/gallon and where you live, diesel is $2.50/gallon. That's $150/month in diesel, and it doesn't include fuel spent taking your girlfriend out, or any other drives you make aside for work and school. This will also go up when you graduate and your commute goes up an additional 40 miles/day. Your monthly loan payment will be $250. You're now already at $400/month. Add in insurance, and at your age, it likely won't be cheap. So, your car is going to cost you roughly 70% of your income, leaving only 30% for everything else. |
