N55 ticking

I know these engines tick but this seems a little loud considering I just put in new oil. Is this normal amount of tick ? Is it normal for tick to be loud with the engine cover off ?

Totally normal, the direct injection of these engines is noisy. With the engine cover off you will hear more of the direct injection ticking noise. The engine cover has sound insulation on the bottom that helps with the noise of these engines.

Sounds normal to me also, like the person above said these engines tick loud, and even louder when the cover is off and you have the hood open. Or if you’re in the garage surrounded with walls, it echoes even louder.

Btw did you use LL01 approved oil?

Honestly I stopped worrying about ticking noise like that unless it gets much faster with RPM.

I use Castrol euro or liqui moly usually . Any opinions? I hear 0w-40 is good . I heard long life approved oil is more for if your change it over the 10k recommendation? Ticking gets faster at higher speeds but gets quieter when not in idle . Obviously but yeah might throw the cover back on ?

Is it worth hearing the noise for the benefit of more air past the engine or does it not make a difference ? It's kind of getting annoying

I bought a 328i in Dallas as a driver last year (I know, not same motor but bmw) and it had the lifter tick. I changed out to Pennz platinum euro LL04 and it really silenced the tick. The Pennz plat euro L appears to be more for diesel so I switched to Castrol 5w40 (has the LL01) and it is staying quiet.

When I replaced the valve cover a couple weeks ago, it was very clean under there also.

Just my 2 cents.

My N54 335i has no lifter noise, but talking about running without the engine cover, after I did coils and plugs. That shit sounds like a diesel. That sound deadener on the cover is amazing at absorbing the direct injection sounds.

For our cars the gasoline N55 needs LL01, don’t use any oil that is not LL01.
Diesel is LL04. Do not use LL04 in an LL01 specified gasoline engine. I don’t know the reason why, but this is what I’ve read on the forums.

From everything I have read, Pennzoil Platinum Euro LL01 is the best stuff out for our BMW N55, and is what I exclusively use, along with Genuine BMW MANN Filters.
