Would this ticking concern you?
Looking to buy a car a few hours away. Great service records (water pump, gaskets, vanos all done), including regular oil changes. However, the mechanic I sent discovered this. It could be just from short drives around dealer lot and go away after a proper Italian tune up (says the guy tired of driving the old truck). What do you think?
Car is good condition otherwise, and $5,000. It has 161,000 miles and is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Engine ticking sound https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...ampaign=stemp2 Car link Thanks! |

That sounds worse than what I remember from my N52.
If the noise goes away once oil temp comes up, then I wouldn't let that sound deter me. From what I gathered, after maybe 4000 miles on a single oil change I noticed the ticking while the engine is cold. After changing the oil it went away. I noticed the ticking more often and sooner into the interval using something like Castrol or Mobil 1 VS. AMSoil, Redline or Motul (My three favourites, along with Renewable Lube Biosyn) |

Apparently on some N52s it's very hard to get it to go away, however on my 06 330i, if I hold the revs at 3000 for 30 seconds or so, it almost always subsides. If I take it for a propper drive (which it absolutely loves to do) it will most definitely be absolutely silent by the time I get back home, and doesn't come back unless I cold start it and let it idle for a very long time (15-20 mins, which is horrible for it anyway).

Early n52 we would replace lifters and then if that didn't fix it we end up replacing the complete cylinder head.
