As some of you know, after almost 6.5 years of ownership, I've recently had to trade in my E90 for something that is more better suited for extreme environments, as my work requires lots of driving, including going off-road or traversing huge piles of snow that even my xi probably would have trouble clearing, so I got a 2017 Ford Explorer.
It wasn't an easy decision and I didn't quite want to do it, but it's cheaper than having to rent SUVs (especially since I'm a 1099 contractor and I pay my own way, but the income is amazing), some of the assignments mean that I'm away from home for months at a time (and thus might give the tire flat spots and other "sitting disease" issues if I leave it parked), plus there was a lot of mechanical issues that makes it hard to justify keeping.
Speaking of said mechanical issues, just so I can sleep better, here they are just so if a forum member or even someone who likes to do their homework a bit before they buy knows:
- Although I replaced the transmission in December 2017 that the mechanic said was from a salvage car with 51K on the clock, it slipped a bit and the RPMs started bouncing while climbing a hill as I was moving from Southern California to Boise, ID. I hope that was an isolated incident and nothing serious... But then again, I've climbed steeper hills and never had that issue.
- The wheel bearings were on its way out as of August 2019 and was rarely driven (I had a temp assignment that practically shoved the keys of a company car in my hands when I mentioned the car's issues in passing), but when I fled California in December it was still jittery and I toughed through it, but I couldn't justify the cost of a U-Haul (it was $2,020 for the truck alone and another $280 for a tow trailer) and decided to rough it. However, when I came back in town the next month and drove it to run errands, although the jittering went away, the cabin noise is a bit louder than usual; it's not the "ROONROONROON" but a louder yet smooth road noise, if that makes sense.
- Around April 2018, I replaced all the struts, a hydrobearing and some other drivetrain components, and took it to get an alignment at Firestone since I was living paycheck to paycheck, and had I known you needed a special tool to adjust the camber, I would've just sucked it up and went to the dealership... But of course they didn't tell me until AFTER they performed the work. The front right wheel had a little bit of camber, but Firestone told me it wasn't "too serious" and it was "optional"... Then around August 2019 I discovered it ate through enough of the inner edge of the tire to show its metal braids, but the rest of the tire was consistent with the rest of the car at 5/32" tread. I talked the shop that sold me the tires into enforcing the warranty, so you should have new sets of rubber with less than 2,500 miles on the rear (I rotated them to the back), and about 5/32" up front. If the dealership hasn't aligned the car, you should have it checked and aligned ASAP; Pirelli P7 Cinturato run-flats aren't exactly cheap.
- The headlights are HAZY. AS. FUCK. It was a little bit hazy, but my friend talked me into having some guy take a sander to it and put on a protective compound (when I insisted that I was going to have the car murdered out and wanted to smoke the lights a bit anyway, although that never happened), but it was only good for all of 3 months before it got worse. I found some misleading info online about putting on some clear coat, but that made the issue 10x worse. As a result, even though it has HID lights, the light output is even worse than the cars I've recently driven with halogen lights, when it used to shine super bright. I was going to replace the lens, but I heard the lenses are practically fused together with the headlight assembly; I don't have a Dremel kit, I don't have use for one, and I don't know anybody in Boise (I know, it was kind of a leap of faith, especially since CA AB5 was going to threaten my income and I had to leave FAST before it took effect)... And getting a new headlight assembly is pretty far out of budget.
- Being from California, where integrity and individual responsibility is a dying virtue ... Some jackasses hit my car while it was parked... Twice. It made a huge dent in the rear left panel around mid 2017, and a small ripple on the front left wheel well some time last year. It's not very obvious in the listing since the pics were taken by a toaster, but I can tell the rear damage is still there. I just made a hasty repair by pouring hot water over the dent for the rear and brushing on touch-up paint to make it less obvious in both cases, but rest assured it's all cosmetic and there's no frame damage.
- Ever since I replaced a front axle/CV joint, the HDC feature would make a noise upon engaging.
- Small problem: The front map lights sometimes either won't turn on or would only stay on for 30 seconds or so until the computer enters sleep mode and resets it; I haven't narrowed down the issue, but I just resorted to using the bigger dome lights.
- Although I've cleaned it up the best that I can and in the colder months you can't smell it, but when it gets hot there is a faint puke smell... One of my idiot friends who only recently turned 21 got a bit too carried away at a birthday party in Dec 2018 and either refused to puke in the bag, or would lay it down flat when he does use it.
- A/C might need a refill; after about half an hour of use, the car sounds like it has a supercharger until you switch it off.
- Somewhat good news: My exes were prudes, so the seats still has its "sanctity" (not sure if or )
Other than that, everything that should've been fixed or maintained has been done, mostly by yours truly.
