Help: Car won't start after valve cover (VCG) job

Hello all,

So just finished replacing my Valve cover and gaskets on my X1 2013 with the N20 engine 82k miles. Tedious job but pretty straightforward. I have done all VCGs on all my bimmers E30, E46, E92, and never had a problem.

However, the car won't start. It cranks but it won't start. Battery was disconnected before the job and fully charged with my battery tender overnight after the job. I double checked all connections, bolt torques, etc. and all seems to be ok. I read the codes with bimmerlink and the only one I get is:

Code A10A
EWS4_Timing_Chall_Resp_Fehler
Symptom: No signal".

Any suggestions? -appreciate any input.

One thing i can say, is that error probably has nothing to do with you motor as it's from CAS (Car Access System) i would rest it, and get a better scan tool. If you can get a copy of ISTA+, you may have better luck.

My guess is you left something disconnected - I haven't touched this car yet so I don't know what all is involved in the VCG but probably crank sensor or some sort of ground wire

SOLVED: When reinstalling the High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) it is very important to MANUALLY crank the engine so that the exhaust camshaft is at bottom dead center (lowest point). I did not do this and broke the HPFP. Also the fuel rail needed to be primed. New HPFP kit was $300 OEM Bosch.
