open breather hole????

Did some detailing underhood and noticed an open hole on metal fitting beside engine cover toward front on drivers side? This is near coolant bottle but on engine. Wish I knew how to post photo.. What is and why is there an open hole??

I should have mentioned this is the B58 m40i engine.

There should never be any open holes into your valve cover, block, intake piping, etc. If you aren't sure at all, take a photo and post it here before doing a lot of driving.

Do you mean the place where a hook is put on to pull the engine??

I took a look at mine & there is a pressure line for the a/c that is used for pressure measuring that has a plastic cap on it to keep dirt out, that may be what you're seeing

No . Not engine lift hook. There is a small black plastic and metal box for want of a better word with a open hole pointing straight up. This is on drivers side of car beside plastic engine cover towards front.

That is the throttle body.
