RaceChip and Service

Has anyone brought their car in for service and left the RaceChip installed? Given the location it connects in the 850i it's less than easy to remove like it was in my old M5... just wondering if I left it connected if BMW would deny any warranty related items?

Its too much of a risk IMHO to leave it. How long does it take to just unhook the cables and the remove the harness while leaving the clips intact on the M850i?

Once you actually get to the disconnects in the car it's a matter of minutes but trying to get your fingers to plug them in and disconnect is the hard part.

Passenger side is easy... driver side isn't.

Requires removing and unbolting parts. Just not a fun process.

My 2018 F90 M5 was WAY easier to do.

I have a close friend who is mechanic and says "while it's fine, you only run into a problem if there is a problem with the engine ".

Thus, for an oil change it shouldn't be a problem. But if you're blown a header or gasket or misfire cylinder... then you got a problem.
The flip side, the odds of any of that happening in 3 years is extremely small, even with a chip.

BMW dealers flag based on what they want to do and see or even investigate. Case in point is member Quickburn who had a flat tire on his M5 and took it in for a repair but left his RC in. Well the shop foreman saw a CEL and flagged the car. Its all in what the decisionmaker decides. You should see his post in the F90 section:

https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...hlight=flagged

I for one, would not take a chance on a 4/50k mile warranty and the chances of some random individual deciding the fate of coverage. The product in itself being attached can be a flagable (is that a word) offense.

I'm fairness, he asked them to look in the engine with the chip installed.
Not that they couldn't see it on some computer diagnostic, but he asked for them to check the engine. And even he said that they did work many times without a problem.

"They have run diagnostics and even the service with it installed and no issues however this time [when I asked them to look for it] the foreman saw it and flagged me."

There is more to it than what is posted but as he is my friend but Ill leave it at that... there are many other flagging posts over years and years here that clearly dictate its a "by choice" and not mandate to flag. You should see the horror stories across these boards and other sites and brands.

Have you heard of Audi's process? The plug your car in no matter what and do a search for anomalies up front. They are the flag kings.

I just will say this- remove it to remove any doubts.

you're already guilty of modifying the car, it's only a matter of time before you are caught.

it's like a criminal saying the "cop was selective" in picking me. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

that said, yes you can be smart about. Remove the chips and mods.
But you will be caught eventually, it's just a matter of when.

I like this one for my criminally insane friends LOL:

"If you dont want to be guilty, dont be there"

I know its stupid but its appropriate in my business

I would at least remove the module and use the bypass plug.
Bypass plug is small enough where you will be able to tuck it in to some corner.

I did my X3MC break-in service with it on. They didn't say anything about it.
And it was sitting duck inside the engine bay with show purpose orange casing.

Thank you Ben. That was my thought as well. It is easy to tuck away with bypass plug.

I'd bet BMW is more on the prowl for these kinds of things than ever before, as the new CEO is determined to reduce costs in as many ways as possible.

My bad, in your word, it should be Autumn. Lol.

Besides, don't test me on cheap mods. I can do my magic.

c'mon—you can't still think that works?

Flashing back to stock won't stop them detecting mods if they choose to do so.
