Possible Battery Issues

Hi All,

I mostly drive my car a short distance each day, 1 mile to and from work. I go for a bit of a spin at the weekends bu rarely on a good run.

I wonder what detrimental effect this will have on the battery as the stop/go function has already ceased to work.

I had a similar thing on my Audi S5, that got to the point where I was getting the message to start my engine or the radio would shut off. I had that from new in March 2015, it still only has 6000 miles on the clock.

Should I buy a decent battery charger and give it a boost every few days to stop the battery slowly dying.

Any advice greatly received.

one mile is brutal on any car. you should run your cars 20-30 minutes/miles/km every week to keep them in proper order.

I'd recommend every Saturday or something to drive each car for a bit to keep them running.

Good advice, I do the same since my 850 is not driven much (bought 12/19 and I have ~700 miles on it) and a 30 min drive keeps her happy.

yeah, I don't always practice what I preach but I try to do it.
my m850i has 1900 miles in 11 months.

20-30 minutes/miles is about enough to work all the fluids, get the round spots off the tires, and pump the brakes and throttle controls.

The stop/go function stopped working on the 2020 M850? It won’t really function if the car is only driven 1 mile before being shut off. Although operates weirdly, it usually only takes effect once the engine is warmed up (which won’t occur in 1mi).

I don’t think you will have a battery problem as long as the car is driven regularly ie. doesn’t sit for extended time (months). However, by driving it such short distances frequently from cold, you will have built-up condensation in the engine that does not have the opportunity to evaporate and this can be harmful (corrosion). Try to routinely rub/drive the car to at least normal operating temperature (middle of the scale) before shutting it off.
