New Mod

I got these in a few weeks ago, hopefully they will be put in this weekend. I have a friend who works for BMW so luckily I get all the work done on my car cheap. They are 4.10's that I got from diffsonline, not sure if anyone has dealt with them but they have great cusotmer service. Here is a pic I took of the ring and pinion in case anyone is wondering what it looks like.

Ya I'm really excited to see if it's as good as everyone says it is. I will be sure to post back in this thread about what I think. Looking at that pic the pinion looks rusty but in really life it's shiny and clean....

You are going to love it... I also got my 4.10s from diffs online. It was the best mod i did so far. 1st gear is still usable. I even had one of the members here meet up and take my car for a spin, and if i can get him to chime in he will say that the gears really bring the car to life.

I am considering this, but with the future possibly bringing and ESS supercharger to my car I would be scared that 1st would be utterly useless... Anyone with F/I e46 M3 and these gears??

I have read on the m3 forums of guys with a blower and 4.10's. They all said it is a very good setup to make smoke.

Not with our redline. Typically it seems most car makers try to set things up so you can hit 60 or 62mph (depending on market) while in 2nd gear. The stock 3.62 does that with room to spare, the 3.91 I've got puts you right at the edge, and the 4.10 is just outside it.

While I personally felt the 4.10 was too short for a daily driver, tons of M3 owners have already made the swap and have no complaints - I'm definitely in the minority. If I were going with them, I'd want to raise the redline a bit.

Attached is a comparison I did of specs for the Z4M with 3.91 compared to some other cars:

I have the Dinan package in my car, and Dinan recommends the 3.23 differential. Why would that be?

It's always about the 0-60 quote. You don't have an M, so your redline is a lot lower. Guess what speed you hit at redline in 2nd gear with your engine with a 3.23:1 final drive?

I would not do gears with FI but some M3 owners have and said they like it. You can do software and have the redline increased for 4.10 if you want.

My car already redlines in 2nd at about 60 or 62. What would be the benefit of the 3.23 diff from Dinan or any other diff?

The ring and pinion shipped were just under a thousand. As for the install I am not sure yet. We were supposed to do it this weekend but my buddy was to busy to do it. It looks like it's going to cost between 500-900 for the install.

Decreasing the gearing (i.e., using a lower final drive gear) makes the car build revs quicker in all gears. When you build revs quicker you get to the max speed per gear faster. Of course the lower gear makes the theoretical max speed per gear a little lower, but other forces will keep the car from reaching those theoretical speeds, at least in top gear. In short, going from a 3.62 to a lower 3.91 gear for the Z4 M will increase acceleration measureably and there's little to no loss in actual terminal speed in top gear. Only downside is a slight increase in revs at a constant speed. The Z4 M has a fairly short gearbox, with the exception of 5th and 6th. Good enough to accelerate to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. The shorter final gear will put 0 to 60 times in the mid 4s range. Not bad. There are other mods which will also help acceleration without increasing whp/torque, such as a lighter flywheel/clutch set. Reason is the lower mass enables the engine to rev quicker. This alternative costs much less than the final gear swap. These are two mods I will do at some point. I prefer the gear swap first, especially while still under warranty.

Here's a comparison chart I made after doing the 3.91 swap on my Z4M (left out the decimal on drag coefficeints). The Z4M is already a pretty good performance bargain, but the gears put you in some pretty exalted company in terms of acceleration, if not handling and top speed. I agree with MV about the flywheel, which seems really heavy in these, but I'll wait to do that when I have to go in for something else:

BTW for anyone interested these are now on sale at $775 shipped for 3.91 or 4.10 gears,

I'm very tempted at that price!
