Gear Shifts in Sport +/Manual

Question-

So I was in sports plus and manual mode w transmission to the left in sport too. I floored it now that my break in is over and found the gears weren't shifting automatically when I'd hit red line. It would hit redline and just bounce off until I manually shifted. In my F30 it would shift for me if I didn't manually shift in time.

Is this how it should be or will it eventually shift for you if you don't hit it quick enough?

I haven't tried this but I'm pretty sure the M340i will auto up shift. Interesting if it doesn't!

That's what I thought? Maybe bc it's the first time I was letting it rip full out but I was surprised when it didn't and I was thrown forward pretty hard a couple of times

Once shifter is to the left in Sport plus, it doesn't auto up shift since you're in manual mode. You must either use the paddles or the shifter to change gears which makes sense.

Sure, I also read some similar questions in the F30 forum. Was anticipating it to shift for me and when it didn't it jerked me forward and surprised me. Even tho it probably shouldn't have lol

The G20 upshifts automatically when shifter is in S. When you use the paddles or shifter to put it into M, you have to upshift. It will not upshift automatically.
I had a F32 430i loaner last year and that worked the same way too.

Idk about the M340i but in the 330i, irrespective of which mode it is in, if the shifter is in S, the car will upshift automatically. If you go to M, it will not unless you upshift. It will downshift automatically even in M when the RPMs fall to prevent the car from stalling.

Good to know! I thought I read something about the tranny learning to adapt to your drive style and was wondering since it was the first time I full out floored it if maybe it was missing something.

I appreciate everyone's insight! Love how I can post something and receive good info within minutes usually

As others, in sport plus mode it will auto shift, but on moving the selector across to manual it won't auto shift and will only shift up on the paddles or the sequential shifter movement... it will downshift if you slow down

Is it possible to over rev and damage the car in this way, like a mechanical over-rev aka money shift? Or will the car protect itself?

If you downshift by mistake while near the redline, or if you downshift in such a way that when you go down a gear, theoretically, the car will over-rev, it will not let you go down a gear even if you use the downshift paddle. Basically, the DME prevents money shifting.

Will the computer let this happen to a degree that damages the car? What would happen if someone down shifted with the gear shifter in sport+ going highway speed?

There’s a rev limiter in place and the DME will not let it rev past the limit. Technically the car should be fine if it happens a few times by mistake.

My car just bounced off the rev limiter until I up shifted. Going that fast it kinda lurches you forward pretty hard if you don't hit the shift in time but these cars are so well protected by computers as noted above. One would have to try pretty hard to do significant damage.

The B58 and even previous N55 are capable of a lot more power and seem to be really durable from my few years with them.

No you can’t blow the engine or transmission on a automatic car by doing any of the above the ecu prevents you from over revving or downshifting to many gears
