Modernspare.com will set you up for roughly $400. Comes with a jack and tools in a nice canvas bag. Ask for Matt. He set me up on the x7 and M5. Their kit requires a spacer which they furnish but it does fit.

Can you share some pics of how everything is stored in your X7?

It will not fit using the canvas bag but works great with out it. A bit snug but definitely has to go face down. Their website doesn’t list the x7 but the x5 kit works. Matt was a big help.

Thanks for the pics! It looks very OEM (and the OEM spare installs face down as well). I had never heard of this company before so this looks like a good alternative to piecing together an expensive OEM kit. I like their jack solution too which is much easier to operate.

Two more quick questions...

1. Do you have the trailer package? The brake calipers that come with the trailer package are different than the standard ones (but other than the part number, I don't know if there is a physical size difference). Just trying to determine if the spacer is required for trailer brakes like it is for those with the M-Sport brakes.

2. Does the spare sit a bit recessed inside the spare tire well, like the OEM space saver? The OEM space saver spare option from the factory also comes with a storage tray that sits on top of the spare. When installed, the tray will sit flush with the two side pieces where the rear OEM covers are stored/latched. I have this storage tray on order and still want to use it. If the tire width is the same as OEM, I would think it would fit just like OEM. But going from a 19" tire (OEM) to an 18" tire, there could be some minor dimensional differences and every mm counts for this application.

Good tip on the carrying case. Doesn't seem necessary for the X7 application anyway as there should not be a need to remove the spare compared to other cars that don't have a dedicated storage location for a spare.

Once again, great find... !!!!

I have the trailer package. The kit didn’t come with a spacer originally. I agreed to be the test mule for the x7 and M5. Both cars have the same spare but both needed a spacer to clear the calipers. Without the spacer an 18” wheel would never work. The spacer is 1 1/2” so it’s thick but it clears on both cars.
I don’t think the oem tray will work because of the 18 vs 19 wheel. The spare is recessed nicely into the well. Dropping it in the well is a snug fit. There’s enough room to throw the pillows in the well and the cargo cover snaps back in to place as well.
The tools are nice too. I only had to buy a 13/16” socket to fit the lug sockets. The wheel has two sets of holes. The narrower holes are the match for the spacer and the kit socket will remove the full size wheel from the car but will not fit into the smaller set of spare holes. One other minor thing I had to do was slightly squeeze the jack head in a vise so that it would fit into the jack point socket under the car.
So while it seems like a pain I agreed to test both kits. Just make sure you’re getting the 1 1/2” spacer, go buy a 13/16” normal socket for $4, pinch the jack head slightly and you’re good to go. It was worth saving $300 per car for me vs the other supplier.

Great info again...!! Regarding how recessed the spare tire is inside the wheel well, confirming fitment of your privacy cover with the spare should provide confirmation if the OEM storage tray will fit, which can be seen below (the owner has removed the privacy cover to use the tray to store other stuff, which is my intention as well):

The OEM spare tire size is 155/80-19, the one in the kit is 155/85-18 (for the X5 anyway, assuming it is the same for the X7 kit they made you). According to an online tire size calculator, both tires have the same width at 6.1 inches. So my "gut" is telling me that the storage tray should work with the tire kit from Modern Spare. The only unknown is that tire sizes can vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, even though they may have the same size printed on the tire. Ironically, the diameter of the OEM spare is 28.8" and the one in your kit is 28.4" so the spare in your kit should fit less snug than the OEM spare (but not enough to make a difference based on your observations apparently).

Too bad on the need for a spacer as I would have preferred not to have one, but this is just for emergencies so no big deal I guess. I have the trailer package as well which is why I asked. Buying an extra socket is easy, although I am surprised they did not include one in their kit that would work with their wheel. Also, as far as fitting that supplied jack into the factory jack point adapters, I would get one of these:

They can be had for cheap from a bunch of online vendors. I actually have a few in my garage and they work great.

Once again this is great work! I actually found what might be a cheaper OEM alternative than the current OEM alternative, but I like your solution from Modern Spare so I will definitely consider it. Thanks for being the guinea pig ..!!

How much would you say the spare weighs?

Whole kit weighs maybe 25-30 lbs. My mistake I thought you were referring to the round styrofoam insert that fits inside the oem spare wheel. Your storage tray should fit. The socket was a small price to pay for a cheaper solution. The spacer was a small consolation for temporary mobility. I’ve seen some tow truck drivers do some damage so my ultimate goal was to avoid roadside assistance due to a simple tire problem. Especially in the M5. It’s ridiculous you can’t buy the oem spare at a reasonable price.

Actually, I think you can. After searching for a while, I just found out BMW offers a not so well advertised space saver rim/tire combo for ~$270 for the X5, X6 and X7. Yes, that is a wheel AND tire for that price. Sold primarily in Europe for BMW work/service vehicles like police cars, etc, but apparently US vendors can still order it. The catch is that the rim that comes with that kit is "heavy". Or rather, the $500+ rim that you can buy separately (with no tire), which is the one that comes with the factory spare option I believe, is a "light" alloy wheel.

I was trying to get some weight data on both of them until I found out about the spare tire option you have. It is making me re-think how I want put together my spare kit, finding the balance between price and function. The aspects about your kit that I like is that the wheel is a light alloy wheel (not sure how much that really matters), the available jack is easier to use, and the tire is a road tire that has a much longer service life than 50 miles. I recently traded in a Ford Expedition for my X7. It came with a full size spare that I used 3 times during my ownership for well over 50 miles.

MMM5 I have a quick question about the tire that came with your kit. Modern Spare advertises that the tires they use are actual road tires, with normal speed ratings an no mileage restrictions. However, when I looked up the 155/85-18 tire that they use with the X5/X7 kit, which I believe is the Continental CST-17, the specs for that tire state it is a compact spare with a 50 mile nominal range and 50 mph speed limit, which is different than what Modern Spare advertises on their site. The limited specs of a space saver spare tire is not a deal killer for me. But I just wanted to verify what the specs are with the tire that is sourced for the X5/X7 kit.

Thanks!

Any dealer that does not order the spare is a moron... it's only $150 and the cheapest option available for the x7... now of course for that much money, bmw should make it standard.

I ordered the modern spare kit and they now ship it with a bigger size (diameter) tire. Still fits fine in the spare well inside.

Apparently I need to order a dang spare kit for my incoming X7 since my moron SA forgot to add it in even though the build sheet has it listed. Anyways, I was looking on Modern Spare and the X7 isn’t listed. Based on previous comments, it looks like the 18” spare will work with the added spacer with my Msport breaks brake. It was mentioned above that I may need to vise the jack head. Anyone have a picture of why this is needed?

This is obviously a dealer issue. You ordered it, the spare was on the build sheet, and the SA screwed up and didn't order it.

I would just tell the dealer that this issue is on them. They need to order you a spare kit from BMW.

I would not spend a dime on the kit and would tell your dealer they need to eat the cost since they screwed up and failed to order it as requested.

Agreed and I’m going into the dealership tomorrow to have a word with the sales manager.

Modern spare company is going to be offering an 18” and 19” spare wheel kit for the X7. Should be available in the next 90 days if anyone cares. I am on a waitlist for the 19” when it comes available.
