Thumbs up M850 Trounces S63 Coupe

Just ran across this (sorry if rp) but was surprised to see the M850 beats the heavier but far more powerful 603hp 664 trq S63 by a good margin. I don't know what lingo they're speaking (Russian?) or what they're saying, but the M850 seems to get the jump on the first run (16:25) but just keeps pulling and pulling ahead. In the second run (17:30) the S63 gets the jump yet the M850 catches up and pulls and pulls on it. Nice work BMW M850!

Per that video and from a dig, there's no comparison--the M850 shamed it. The AMG seemed to be pulling slightly on the M850 in the later races from a roll at high 3-digit top-end speeds but they were hitting limits even German Autobahn cops might look at twice. Winner: M850... and easily.

Isn't this comparison unbalanced, though--it should really be M850 Coupe vs. S550 Coupe or S63 vs. M8--they're the model-level competitors... and yet the M850 kicked its arse anyway and did so convincingly.

If the S63 stands against an M8 Coupe, he's going to need a cellphone to know the race is over.

Yes very well said, especially the point on comparison vehicles.

I sense this is where BMW missed a trick - so many of the early reviews of the m850i from the journo's was all about "the interior isn't as good as the merc S class" and "is this a sports car or a grand tourer??". Actually the interior is excellent, but the performance AND the pricing blows the S class away.

Then of course we have the M8.....

For the sake of full disclosure that is the "old" S63 with the 5.5 liter V8 and weak tranny with no race start. But never the less it got its ass kicked.

The M850i is quite formidable in its own skin

Ah good to know... that would explain the significant launch difference. Even then, though, and as you say--the M850 just carried on pulling.

Sooo... M8, Vic?

Im so tempted with the deals out there but I really need to think about how bad do I want to dump a perfectly good and unique First Edition. I dont need botht the M8 and F90 so its going to be a 2nd test drive to reinvigorate my desire to spend more money

Yeah, the old S63 was surprisingly slow and we know that the M850 is a great performer.

Wasn't BloozemanAZ having the same experience?

2018+ S63 coupe is listed as 3.4 to 60. C&D tested it a 3.0 sec. to 60 with 11.2sec at 126mph. Grain of salt of course as its C&D.

But the car now an E63s in different dress. Mechanically it is identical.

Yeah the 9 speed MCT is worlds better than that 7 speed MCT in the old S63. I do like the visuals of the new S63 with blacked out trim. Its a crazy priced car though and softer than goose shit right off the lot but the luxury in the cabin and the lack of a B pillar has always been a lure to some.

It's a luxurious performance boat with priority on luxury...

I do like the look of the car and wish BMW would have brought some of the airy cabin feel to the M8.

Liked the lack of B-pillar from our CL days and the glass roof is cool too.
We had the Magic Sky electro-chromatic roof in the SL. Easy way to add 100+lbs of course and those cars are too heavy to begin with.

Besides the 9speed, the variable AWD was a huge improvement as well.

But the S-Class coupes/cabs have gone the way of the Dodo bird.
Last order in May and production ceases in August of this year.

In addition to the 9 spd, the facelifted S63 gains +/-26 hp, as the previous version has 577hp, trq I believe is the same @ 664. Even though the old AMG MCT wet clutch 7 speed was clunky and harsh at times, once moving especially at WOT it shifted very quickly and with no hesitation, but subpar especially comp'd to the 9 speed. The same was true with my 16 S550 coupe with it's 7 spd version (traditional/non wet clutch) vs my 17 with the traditional 9 spd, as it was night/day better but the 7 speed was super quick shifting, just not always smooth and truly had no place in cars of this caliber...

Agreed as Vic55 called that out already in a thread in which I posted recently about spanking S63 Coupe which looked to be current generation. Most likely it too was the 5.5 liter V8 vs the current generation.

Yep, and as just posted in this thread it was likely the prior generation as from a skin perspective they look the same. Then again even the current generation vs a M850i may all come down to whom is behind the wheel for a real world experience vs the "specs". I'm far from competent in the M850i at this point but getting more comfortable with every drive.

I think its 25k but the extreme high starting point even that wont really help ... enough that is. These are what I call the boat anchors of all boat anchors. Quite possibly worse than the new AMG GT63S.
