Driving without the key

So today the car was started, loaded up with the stroller, in the process the key was left home. We got in the car. Went to the gas station couple of minutes away. After getting gas the car would not start back up. Realizing there is no key, and no way to put the car in neutral I was in a daze. Luckily the fast station worker let me use his car to get the key. But no information was displayed on the dash about key being absent. Has anybody experienced this before? I would think the car pings the key occasionally but I guess it doesn't.

I always wondered what happened there in that situation :-/

Mine does ping NO KEY if the key leaves the car. However it's possible it only does it once (I didn't check properly) thus could have pinged when you loaded the stroller.

It should really do it periodically, like the above - 300miles and you'd be scr3wed.

A warning should have displayed on the dash and audible ding that the key was not detected. Either you weren't paying attention (understandable with a baby and all) or somehow it didn't display.

Yeah, I'd like to think I'm nicer than most, but that's more "call an uber" territory.

Personally I think this is a flaw, mine pings when I get out of the car with the engine running and theres a little warning triangle when the key isnt present, I also think it pings if you get back in without the key. That aside I personally believe you shouldnt be able to put the car in Drive without the key being present, this would prevent the car being stolen if you leave it running for a couple of seconds and I expect it may also prevent some of the thefts where they proxy the keys signal through a device to the car.

They could also write into the code that if the car is opened correctly (spoofed) then started and driven then the key signal is lost that the car is stopped and put into Park and it calls for the police with its location and sends the same details to the App.

Everything is possible with connected vehicles

For liability reasons a car manufacturer is not going to allow a vehicle to shut down and placed into park once it is underway.

Personally I would like them to provide the ability to taser the driver and fill the cabin with CS Gas after locking all doors and windows shortly before chopping their hands and feet off.

Of course the car could be parked safely before shutting down or even better drive itself to the nearest cop shop.

I sooooo concur. However, having been heavily involved in various software industries over the past 30 years (including mission critical projects like nuclear) would I absolutely trust 100% any computer system? Perhaps not ;-)

Just look at what Boeing did by lack of foresight. That's why I truly don't believe properly self driving cars are any where near. At least not in my lifetime (that's for another thread I guess).

Cop shop or chop shop?

My X3 doesn't have remote start.

I can understand the base X3 not having that feature, but when you're paying almost double for a fully loaded model, you should get those perks when the system is fully capable of supporting it. I would not have minded an extra few hundred dollars to get that option.

You can remotely start the car but you can't drive it without the key. At least that's how it works in my G20 330i. I once left the key in my wife's purse and got into the car after remotely starting and unlocking it but it wouldn't let me drive when I tried pressing the start stop button once inside saying it couldn't detect the key or something like that.
Unless it's different in the X3.
