Noisy runflats
My M40i has the base 245 50 19 square setup and at 8000kms (5000mi) Im hearing a whirring sound most prominent from 40-60kms /hr (25-35mph) Is this the runflat bridgestones or possibly a wheel bearing? Ive never had a car with runflats before.

I doubt it's a bearing with only 8k kms. I suppose it's possible, but would be my first guess. I have Bridgestone RFT's (19" winters) with about 15k kms on them and they are somewhat noisy at higher speeds. Chances are good it's the tires but can't be certain

If it's the the Alenza's then it's definitely the tire. Horrible tires. They became unbearably loud at 18k miles and had to change them out even though they had some tread left. Got Pirelli Cintaro All Seasons and they are much better. Horrible OEM tire dunno why BMW went with the Bridgestones.

I've gone from 19's RFT to 19's non-RFT. Same tyre manufacturer and the difference is night and day for the better. IMO RFT are tat.

The Bridgestone were the RFTs that came with the car.
Michelin AS 3+ are not RFTs. So much more comfortable. Less noise on the highway. The sidewalls are not as hard as the RFT. So much less jarring driving over expansion joints and rough roads. I'm running 36F/39R PSI on the Michelin and that's comfortable for me in Sport. From what I've heard, if you want an even more comfortable ride the Conti DWS06 are a good option. The sidewalls are less stiff than the Michelin so you get a bit more roll but a bit more comfort. |
