Inexpensive tire rack

I spent the weekend cleaning up and organizing my garage. I thought about buying or building a wall-mounted tire rack (actually 2) to hold my track and winter tires, but I came up with a better solution. I went out to Costco and bought a "Gorilla Rack"-type shelving setup, but used the middle shelf racks to hold the tires. Instead of spending $300 on two racks, I spent $70 and even got some extra storage out of it. Not bad!

That looks really good. The only thing I would worry about is the tire touching the wall and leaving a mark.

Yeah, it's not obvious in the picture but the shelf is pulled away from the wall to provide clearance. I suppose that if space was tight you could add a sheet of plastic or something behind the shelf to protect the wall.

Nice! Which rack did you use? Can you tell me which one it is from this link?

It's actually not Gorilla brand. I think Sam's sells Gorilla but Costco has another brand. Anyhow, it's your standard 18" deep, 72" tall 48" wide shelving unit. I think it was $67.99 at Costco.

The key factor here is the "Z-bend" shelf support rails. They'll resist twisting much better than an "L" shaped rail.

Here's a link to Sam's shelving... these are 24" deep, which is probably too deep though. You want about 18" deep to support the tire correctly: http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/nav...=5&item=393281

Buy local! (well, they're only 125 miles away)! I met Richard at Pacific Motosports at a historic race where he was driving an old Maclaren F2 car (identical to my friend's)--nice guy.

Last month the Puget Sound chapter of BMWCCA had a meet at Griot's personal garage/house--I didn't go, but it looked pretty cool, as you can imagine.

I like a lot of their basic products like wheel cleaner & detailing spray. I like that you can buy them by the gallon and refill, too. I go elasewhere for a lot of stuff.

All I use is Griots, micro fiber towels, car wash, wax, interior cleaner, even my bucket is from Griots...

Cool use of the shelving. I have a set already. Good to know I can configure them this way when the time comes.
