Question TPMS Absolutely Necessary?

Preparing the Z4MC for winter here in Denver, and I am planning on picking up a set of used OEM's with winter tires from a M3 or something very compareable. I'm looking for a cheap simple setup.

From my research, as far as I can tell, I would have to have a shop unmount this used setup ('06 and before don't use same TPMS) and then install TPMS valve sensors. I'm trying to avoid this because of the extra $$ for the TPMS and labor and just the general pain of getting anything done on a car when working during normal business hours.

So, the question, how necessary are these little guys? I check tire pressures often. And so far, because of the altitude and temp changes in Denver, I am resetting the damn things every other day.

Anything I really need to worry about if I am already monitoring pressures regularly?

I'd surmise that TPMS is mostly applicable to cars using Run Flat tires. As long as your diligent about checking your tire pressures, you should be allright.

Your TPMS light cannot be turned off but there are a few people on here that just put a peice of black tape over the light or something like that. It is not necessary for driving as long as you are consious about your tire pressures.

Actually, TPMS is for everyone - it's federally mandated for all cars sold in the US after September 1, 2007, part of the TREAD Act that was fall-out from the Firestone recall a while back. So it's not the car makers assuming everyone's a dummy - it's the government.

The tape hack Hawkeye referred to should be clarified - you open the guage cluster and put tape on the inside, over where the indicator is, which this blocks the light. A chunk of tape on your guages would look cheesy.

TPMS are on national backorder right now. Worst enforced decision BMW ever made - forces everyone to spend a ton extra when buying wheels just to add on TPMS. All a safety measure for those people who can't take of their own vehicle and need the computer to tell the whats going on with their car.

It wasn't BMW's decision to make. It's the lawmakers.
