iPhone sound muted by the car

I noticed that if I listen or watch something on my iPhone and my wife drives up to the garage, my iPhone will go mute. The volume slide shows "muted by Bluetooth".
To fix it I have to turn the Bluetooth radio off and all is well again.
I wonder if the sound plays inside the car. I need to check next time this happens.

Sounds likes both phones are paired to the car and you’re in range.

Yes, looks like it. Next time I won't disconnect manually, let's see how long it will keep the connection going. I assume once the car goes to "sleep" it should drop it.
