Finally got my exhaust done, and it's just as good as I expected.
I've made so many mod mistakes in the past that with my last couple of cars I've chosen my mods super carefully. I got my M2 last August, but just now did the exhaust mods I wanted to do, which were...
- Fabspeed Sport Cat - Dinan resonator delete First I just want to say that if you're looking for the stock exhaust sound +30% more volume, more pops/bangs, no CEL, and no tune required, these are the mods for you. I got the Sport Cat used for $875, the Dinan resonator delete for $200, and install was $100, so $1,175 out the door and I couldn't be happier. I did want to mention just a few things though. First, looking at the stock cattted down-pipe compared to the Fabspeed you'd swear that the Fabspeed would be MUCH lighter because of how much smaller the cat section is, but in fact it's just barely lighter, saving only .2 lbs. Second, looking at the Dinan resonator delete, which is a mandrel bent piece of tubing without a resonator, you'd expect it to be lighter than the stock piece with resonator, right? Nope. It's actually heavier, 7.8 lbs vs 6.4 lbs, and if you use the supplied clamps, which are .4 lbs each (wow!) then you're at 8.6 lbs vs 6.4 stock. SKIP the clamps. Things that make you go hmmm. Also, the cold-start is positively murderous. Lastly, between 3500 & 4000 rpm the exhaust now positively howls. I'm not sure I'm going to call it drone, but there's definitely quite a bit of additional volume there. I think my favorite mode is now MDM mode, as far as the sound, but I prefer the throttle response in Sport, it's just a bit more aggressive in tone. Sound clips as soon as I can figure out why the hell my iPhone won't record past 18 seconds. |

The drone is most likely there because you deleted the resonator and it's job is to prevent resonance (drone). There's no performance reason to replace it plus the aftermarket part makes your car heavier as you noticed. I left mine on along with the stock exhaust and installed a Fabspeed sport cat. It's perfect. No drone, louder than stock and an awesome tone.

Secondly, it's not drone, it's just a volume increase in that specific range. The guy that does my exhaust work is so cheap that I can have the resonator put back on just for testing purposes if I like, but I enjoy the sound as-is. The only thing I don't like is the increased volume of the the cold-start. |

Maybe I'm not explaining it correctly.
It's OUTSIDE the car, not inside the car. With the windows up I can barely hear it, it's when the windows come down that it become much more pronounced. And it seems to be more like a resonance. And beyond that, it's not just at those RPM's, it comes and goes throughout the rev range, I'm just not usually in the upper ranges. I'll pin it down exactly soon, but just for fun, I love the sound. I've had drone before, on my Subaru STi, it was a bad sound, a reverberation that I couldn't escape. This is nothing like that. I imagine it to be the natural sound that was there before, just more pronounced now. |

Try reading for comprehension. I was agreeing with you and glad that it didn't bother you inside the vehicle.

I have the exact same setup! Still one of the best and most economical mods I've done so far! I now hunt for tunnels, lol!

I haven't bothered, as the other Andrew already did a great job of it.
