Customer survey - are you kidding?

So I just received a survey in the mail from "MaritzCX" asking me about my 850GC purchase. The survey is made up of 58 questions spread out over twelve pages!! As if that's not enough, two of the questions are made up of over one-hundred sub-parts.

At first, i thought this was a joke, but after reading about it in some on-line articles - it's a legit company.

I'm guessing the response rate for this survey must be in the low single digits. How about asking: How would you rate your purchase/car on a scale of one to ten, and please tell us what impressed you the most?

maybe this is why BMW sends out bottles of scotch to new 850 owners - just to get them through this survey!

Sounds like overkill for sure, but at least it's not like the ones from the dealers where beforehand they plead (sometimes in writing) for you to give them 5 stars whether they deserve it or not...

Your post reminded me of the fact for the first time I received a JD Powers invite to provide feedback on the 2020 M850i purchase. Just like most "junk" mail it's sitting in a pile in my home office. Dug it up and it is all online and according to the pitch it will take 4 minutes to complete. Of course they've added a sweetener that if I respond I'll be included in a $100K raffle cash gift.

I did a little research into MaritzCX and expected they are a "customer experience" aka CX consulting firm. I've used similar animals in my past life to gauge customer experience of tech products I've been a part of developing along with the go to market strategy. My current employer does the same on our products but I'm out of the loop on that as the Marketing team owns it.

All of that said this smells like a BMW driven CX engagement, i.e., unlike JD Powers BMW will own the data and with any hope adjust accordingly to the feedback provided. Thus, you have a golden opportunity in your hands to provide your fair assessment of the purchase process, delivery, quality of the vehicle, etc. (can't read the tiny print of the PDF) which will go directly back to BMW. In other words 10X the value of me completing the JD Powers survey.

Agreed! I find the surveys absurd and bail out near-immediately. Then I get angry at the arseholes that create them because they're too eff'ing stupid to realize their very goal is eliminated because of the stupid, massively-overly thorough manner in which they've pursued it--grade A stupidity. They're the "career choice" vs. "job purpose" definition of an oxymoron.

PS: I don't tolerate fools gladly and these idiots are quite high on my list.

I participate in these things until I reach the first redundant question, in which they're clearly trying to trap me into confirming or contradicting myself, then I bail out.

This generally happens on page 2.

The survey response rate so slow and it's not surprise. Most surveys are very too long and require too much time to complete.

BMW (and other manufacturers) ought to entertain the idea of asking drivers with a history of brand loyalty to meet for happy hour and appetizers to discuss a specific car in detail. Or - via Zoom in today's world. Much more effective.

Information shared in a human interaction circle is much more valuable.

They must want you to be hammered on the whiskey, then fill out the survey!

I got one for JD Power for our SUV, but nothing about the 2019 Bmw I bought. However I was foolish enough to fill out the first JD survey and got "rewarded" with a second survey that looked twice as long as the first. Since the first took like an hour, I'll never do one of those again.

I toss Maritz away all the time ... its not an official survey nor does it help your dealer or your CA.

Any survey of more than five questions that takes more than two minutes is unlikely to be completed.

Unless someone is unhappy with service/product in which case they will happily complete it instead of complaining to the service/product provider……. but only after moaning on Facebook.

It’s the law!

There's no way I'm spending that much time doing a survey without getting something in return. I don't have that kind of time to waste on something like that. I wonder how many people actually take the time to answer something that long without petering out early on. I will certainly MOST GLADLY share how hideous my experience with BMW has been with this M8 purchase, but not over 12 pages.

I have received several surveys in the mail...all I know for certain is the sender knows I purchased a luxury car over $150k and I just don’t want marketing people adding me to their lists...F’ that !

I threw them all in the garbage...keep your bottle of scotch, keep your sweepstakes entry for $100 (oh wow) just forget my name please!

Now if BMW sent me one, or the dealer did, that would be different as there are some design issues on my Cabriolet that shouldn’t be there in an automobile at this price in my opinion.

I'm surprised. I thought you would be waiting for a survey to vent. 12 pages is probably not enough for you.

Oh I'm venting every chance I get but I don't think the questions they are going to ask on a 12 page survey will be super conducive to that. And I want the info to come from and go direct to BMW.

Sure don't. The ship is supposed to make it to NJ on the 29th + maybe another 3-4 weeks to schedule my PCD. It's been sooooo long that I'm now almost indifferent to the wait. Yes its coming and I'm going to be crazy in love once I get the car, but where I was once in the denial stage of the wait I've long ago moved into the acceptance phase of grief and am just kinda numb to it. I don't want to be numb to getting the most amazing car I've ever owned, but alas, that's where I am at the moment thanks to the worst service ever from BMW during this whole experience. I was so looking forward to driving it during the warm summer months, but BMW denied me of that privilege this year.

You are right it will be a waste.

Maritz does surveys for so many builders that all these become are numbers in their data pool. I get them all the time as you know because I buy new cars and they always find their way to the round file.

While your situation is painful; Maritz wont help you as much, if at all, versus a true BMWNA survey which you will get (as you have eluded to). And even that will fall on deaf ears from time to time.
