Vaico vanos solenoid n52

I'm at 84k miles and from what I've read it's about time to replace these. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I'm getting a rough idle at warm start with no codes and have absolutely no idea why, so hoping this might help. But either way, they're recommended to replace at 70k from what I've read.

I've heard of them being cleaned and swapped at regular intervals, but I don't believe Vanos solenoids fall under the umbrella of preventative maintenance. I would suggest cleaning them if that hasn't happened under your ownership

Why would they need replaced at 70k miles? By who? Mine are original at 156,000 - they still work just fine.

I've cleaned them twice. I just read that they would need replacement at around 70k. Fair enough.

My original Vanos selenoids made it to 210K miles, I replaced them because I was chasing down a rough idle when warm which turned out to be coils, so technically they are still good with over 210K miles on them.

Interesting. I have a rough idle on warm start for about 5-10 seconds. Only in warm start after its been sitting for 20 minutes to an hour or two.

I replaced the coils but they didn't help.

Is the "rough" idle on happening while the system is checking all of the bulb checks?

So, it turns on like normal, then a second or two later it starts fluctuating between 6-700 rpms for 5-10 seconds. I'll take a video today.

Same thing on my N52 after it sits from 1/2 to 2 hours.

my vanos solenoids are original at 160K miles without issue.

my rough idle was caused by ESS with oil in it.

check the ess connector.

Thanks, I will certainly check that out.

Guess I'll leave the solenoids alone.

Will the car throw a code if the ESS is not working correctly?

Interesting, shouldn't I have some oil loss problems though?

Not necessarily; its more like oil vapors than anything that will cause erratic mixture adaption. Any faults in the dme?

I scanned with carly and no codes. I took out all the spark plugs, checked the gap (.043), torqued to 18ft/pds and cleaned the maf today. We shall see.
