Plus I'm pretty sure when you put the car into D and the door is open the car stops anyway and locks up until you close the door again?

Correct, if in drive and open door it puts it in park to stop it auto rolling.

I'd agree, insurance job...probably GAP about to expire...

There is no way to step out of the car and for it to move. Unless some dodgy coding had been done or is it a manual?
