Backing out of driveway ...
Hello all. I've got a 2020 X3 M40i. Every time I attempt to back out of my driveway the car slams on the brakes for no reason. No cars coming at all. It usually takes 3 or 4 tries before I manage to back up. Is this the rear cross traffic emergency braking? The rear of the car does dip down while going through the street gutter. When it dips down is it seeing the pavement? I've looked through the various settings and see no way to turn this off. Any help is appreciated.

Had mine 6 weeks.
There was some plants over growing my driveway and I had the same problem. Slamming on the brakes when reversing. You can turn it off in the settings but I would rather it done that than I hit something I couldn’t see.

Ours (2018) does the same thing and has been driving us crazy for 2 years now. Very slight incline in driveway and not a bush in site. Asked the dealer to calibrate it, they said 'working as designed'. The funny part is that when backing out of a blind parking spot, it had never warned us of any traffic coming from either direction. Never. Nothing like paying for tech that doesn't work..

Is this part of the driving assistance package? Might be a good idea not to order this then I don't mind beeps but maybe automated braking is not for me.

I'm going to turn mine off. Got got my X3 a few months ago and wanted to show it off. Took some friends out to dinner start backing out of the driveway and it stops on a dime with no warning. Practically gave everyone whiplash. So embarrassing. Ironically, my previous vehicle had no tech or safety items at all. The main reason I traded it in was I wanted every tech and safety option available. Now I'm having second thoughts.

I am in same situation. This brake is triggered by PDC, the parking radar. They sense the ground due to the incline and brake to avoid the car hit the objective. Rear traffic crossing is different system. The trick to avoid this is 1. put a bit throttle when back out 2. turn the steering wheel and back out 90 degree |

The trick to avoid this is
1. put a bit throttle when back out, a bit hard to do so 2. turn the steering wheel and back out 90 degree when you reach the end of driveway 3. never tried since first two works for me. But heard you can use the incline control button (not sure how to call it, the one near driving mode buttons, when you use to drive down steep places) |

What I found out is this seems to be a low speed auto brake system, it will trigger easily if you do not give any input to the throttle (the car will assume you are not taking control and may not aware of the danger thus more willing to apply break) So I keep a little bit throttle when move out, and if you keep the speed and move out smoothly, most of the time it will not trigger. But if you stopped and then apply throttle, it will trigger as usual (car may think you found the danger so stopped) |

There is a bulletin that allows a programming conversion for the PDC braking intervention. For X3 and X4 it supposedly helps with seeing the ground and not thinking it is an actual obstacle. I performed this conversion on my personal vehicle but have only personally experienced the PDC with braking intervention happen one time (before the conversion) backing in a parking lot where there was a gutter in the middle and the parking surface was angled downward at the gutter. Haven't ever had an issue since but I'm not sure I've been in an area reversing down an incline onto a flat surface since.

The dealer explained to me it works off speed, angle, and other parameters - if it thinks you are gonna hit it, that's when it engages. Perhaps you are going slow enough, that it 'trusts' you.
