Oil temp fluctuation
While driving today on HWY, notice my oil temp gauge moved a few millimeters to the left, went almost to the second line a few times slowly, then bounces back slowly up to slightly below 250F degrees, where it is normally. Had thermostat replaced last year and coolant flushed two months ago. Outside temp was ~99F. Never seen this before and concerned? 2015w/ 34k on the clock. Thank you

Ive had my thermostat move more to the right when on the highway, about 10 degrees. I think it runs more efficiently.
When I'm in sport mode it moves more cooler to the left

At highway speeds it will raise the temp to 220-240 city driving it's around 200. It's all electronically controlled. Same with the coolant, it will also fluctuate depending on your speed.
It's done for fuel economy/ efficiency.

It will sit at 230ish when on the highway, and in the city it will immediately drop down to 200 or so. Did some research and found it raises temps through the thermostat (which in return raises oil temps) for better efficiency. I monitor through bimmerlink. |

In sport mine stays around 210-220 °f. In comfort, if I am driving in a non spirited manner; it stays at about 240-245°f. However, if I am in comfort and driving spiritedly, it drops back down to 210-220.

The temperature is supposed to fluctuate. The engine is most efficient when it's hot, so when the car senses that you're cruising it allows the temperature to go higher. Higher temperature also can result in pre-ignition when accelerating, so when the car senses that you're accelerating and decelerating it will lower the temperature.

Around town mine’s usually around 210. On long highway slogs with cruise control at 85-95 mph it settles in around 230. Chasing corvettes uphill through mountain passes at 5k rpm it drops down to 190 or so.
Ambient temps never seem to affect my oil temp - even on 115F days the oil temp is same as always. I do have the stock extra radiator and ducting on my 2014 m-sport which probably helps keep it stable in hot weather and high rpm. |

During the summer months the highest i have noticed is 234. Normally it stays at 226. All in comfort mode.
Interesting thing is that when I'm on EcoPro the temperature drops down to 217-220 range. |
