family car

hey guys

the pcp on my 325d is coming to an end around December time and I've been looking around for a new car. With 3 kids the 3 series can be quite tight for space with all of us in there so was thinking of getting something bigger.

ideally id like to spend 18-20k on another pcp but all the cars I've seen seem to 22-25k for what id like.

just seeing what everyone else uses as a family car and how do you find it ?

thanks

3 kids is going to be tight in most cars, what ages..?

PCP is only partly about the purchase price, as much to do with finance rate and residual value. So be prepared to try a few other options just to see what works...

Prices have spiked a bit now and dealers aren’t playing ball on used stock, so maybe better to leave it till furlough scheme starts to end and the proverbial hits the fan!

G30 is pretty decent size in the back and easily accommodate 3 kids assuming no car seats however

I've got a 3,7 and 12 year old so the 2 youngest are on car seats thats why its abit tight. Ive been looking at the tiguan which my local bmw dealer just got one in stock but their only willing to discount the car and take £330 equity on the current car over if I go through the finance with them at 9.9 Apr but if I go through my bank I'll get it at 5.4 Apr. Think its safe to say with their current attitude I won't be going back there in a hurry

With two kids in car seats you are going to strugle with pretty much any standard car / suv (Tigun is certainly no bigger than a G30).

At 7, depending on size, you might get away with a booster, but that and full size car seat means the 12 year old is going to be squashed in the middle.

Everyone I know with three kids has ended up going with some kind of MPV or SUV with three rows (that's why we stopped at two )

You might get away with an S Max and all in middle row. But I would say forget desirability and driveability and buy on space and price for a few years..

What about a 5 series? Failing that you are looking at a big suv.
Depending on your budget the bigger VaG group options may suit, been some good toureg leases recently. Plus you have the skoda and seat 7 seater which are actually pretty good.

Obviously a bit more but x5?
when you say 18 to 19k is that total price of the car or cash you have to spend?

More flexibility if you put one of your children in the front and wife in back, although that might not go down very well.

More room in the back with one child seat in middle and people not in car seats either side. We do it when we go on holiday, although we do have a Q7 that has plenty of shoulder room and makes that set up more than comfortable. Did the same in the 440i a few times for journeys up to a couple of hours and wasn’t too bad.

to be honest we don't really do long journeys very often but would be nice to have the space if we did. Whats the back room light in a x4? looking at the dimensions its the same width as a 3 series

We have the Tiguan, with 3 kids and 2 car seats you’d have to get the Allspace...

I had a Disco Sport for the weekend a couple of years ago... if I had 3 kids I'd definitely consider one of those... or an X5 with the extra rear row.

A Discovery Sport in HSE spec is a pretty good car for a pretty decent price, my only gripe in fact is that they only come with an I4 engine... I reckon the 3.0 V6 diesel in the Jag F-Pace or the I6 diesel from the Range Rover/Sport would go down a treat. I4 diesel engines just are not refined enough, and I say that driving a 320d.

Unfortunately you don't have many other options for 7 seats without going down the minivan soccer mom route, and there isn't much choice in the UK for people movers that are engaging to drive and look good.

If you don’t do many long journeys could you live with one child seat in the front and wife in the back for the journeys you do take when you’re all together?

It would put a lot more cars in scope.

We do it, it’s a bit different though, my mother in law comes on holiday with us in the summer usually and makes the 5th person. So the wife sitting in the back is just for that purpose, and not all the time.

I always had large estates when my kids were little and growing up - Audi, BMW, mb, Volvo. Admittedly, I've got two, not three, but we often had a third in the back - niece/nephew - when going on holiday and always managed with seats and boosters. I've always avoided SUV's as I've always disliked them. Big estates offer the advantage of large boots, wide rear benches, integrated roof rails for roof boxes, and they tend to drive well - love 'em!

Discovery has 7 seats as standard with 6 isofix positions. Not sure if the isofix flexibility applies to SE/Landmarks but if it does, then those models in V6 form might be a bit of a bargain with a decent discount. They have few of the frills but pretty much all essentials, Range Rover running gear and rolling comfort at less than 2/3rds price.

I'm not sure you will get a Disco 5 for 20k with any warranty - and would you run one without a warranty...

Sorry, guilty of not reading the thread properly! Warranty direct, definitely.

Mine had an issue with a camera/radar sensor which caused a bit of a wobbly at four months old. At that point the fault was not correctly diagnosed, and it recurred a couple of weeks later.

This opened up the legal right of rejection, which I took as a financial no-brainer. LR/dealer put together a great deal.

Once repaired, the car was faultless from early Feb to 10 days ago. After 51 weeks/6700 miles with the first one, a new Disco landed.

I'm biased, I think it's an amazing all-rounder and a great family vehicle. Mine had a motorway and Devon lane blast on Friday and it was utterly brilliant.

Here is my old one for sale:

And more generally. Electrics are the biggest common issue.

Apparent oil dilution on early TDV6 diesels, actually a software problem. If you have this then the car wants a service every 2k. Not an issue on the MY19-on 306bhp SDV6 which replaced the 258bhp TDV6.

Little software issues have gradually improved through regular updates and mine have both been OTA, so always running the latest.

There is huge commonality with the FFRR/RRS, so common issues on those also apply. Most things fixed by now as it's a well established platform with the latest major tech changes dating from MY18 in the Range Rovers.

I never had a single problem in nearly 3 years of ownership but from what I can gather now I was very lucky.
