Road tax when selling a car

Scenario I would appreciate some help with. I think it is ok...but keen to hear views.

We sell our company cars at the end of the lease period.

Car road tax expires on 31 August.

Person buying car on 1 September.

Reminder for road tax has arrived for company to pay. Is it ok to not pay the company reminder and the person buying the car taxes it on 1 September?

I think they can do it as part of the V5 transfer.

Is this right? Don't want the buyer ending up with a fine!

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's fine.

The person buying the car HAS to tax it - tax would not transfer over, even if you'd done it.

Even if you paid it, you'd get refunded automatically once the ownership changes as that's how it now works. The new owner needs to tax it.

You would probably lose a month off the refund as DVLA generally get 13 months tax in the year when a car changes owner.

That is my worry.

Old road tax will expire at midnight on 31 August. New owner would need to tax it first thing on 1 Sept.

It's just soda law it all falls on the same day!

Once, in a year not far far away....my tax ran out on 31 July and I picked up my new car 1 August.

I also once forgot , genuinely, to tax my 440i for a significant period of time. Something like six or eight weeks. Had been to Heathrow four times in the period, so passed a serious number of cameras, and left it parked there for a few days each time. When I realised the mistake, I assumed a hefty fine would arrive, but no.

Technically yes. Though there is a grace period and that won't happen. It probably is important that you go online though and tell the DVLA that it has been transferred.

Declare SORN on the 31st once the vehicle is off the road. The new keeper can tax the vehicle on the 1st online before driving using the numbers on the V5C/2 (green slip for new keeper until full V5 in their name arrives from DVLA).

Same here - when we moved I sent the V5C for both cars to teh DVLA in one envelope. The BMW got processed and returned but I found out that the Seat never did. I didn't check - and it slipped my mind. It went for a service at the garage in the village and they told me it was untaxed. I hadn't had reminders (the address wasn't changed) and it was 5 months out of tax. I rang teh DVLA and they told me if you put 2 V5C in one envelope for an address change the agent is not duty bound to process both, only one. They may do 2 but that's upto them. Anyway, in that 5 months i drove Leeds - Preston and back twice a week for work and numerous trips up and down the M1 to Sheffield and school runs etc. Probably 10k miles. I was waiting for a fine too, but nothing (and five months of not paying for tax).

Don't declare it SORN as the new keeper can't then tax it online for 5 working days.

Just leave it.

I have driven round for weeks and not had a problem. Numerous times.

They send a letter out after 28 days to remind you to tax it or sorn it.
