Plz review my custom tune
Hi folks,
I went for a custom tune a few days ago but I’m not very impressed. Its not tuned via the BM3 platform, but via another platform and on a dyno. I do still have a BM3 license, so I used that to log. Setup: M2 N55 LCI DCT Wagner EVO2 Competition Fabspeed Sport catted Downpipe FTP boost & chargepipe I just got back from Germany so currently it’s running RON 102, but normally this is RON98 (93 oct). 100-200 times are around 10 sec on RON102 and 10.5 with RON98. A friend of me with a BM3 OTS 93 Stage 1 M135i N55 (and stock hardware) is exactly as ‘fast’ as I, so there must be something wrong. Link to log: https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5f44...0b430261b828d9. Again, it’s not tuned via BM3, so don’t mind the “stock tune” label. Some remarks from my side: - good torque from low end - throttle / boost mapping a bit spikey, boost really starts after 75% throttle - in middle-high RPM there seems to be missing something. - much carbon deposit on my exhaust tips after tune, before tune I literally n3ver had to clean them, now they’re dirty after each ride. Could anyone shine some light on this log to maybe identity a problem? Thanks! Last edited by squixs; 08-25-2020 at 05:28 AM.. |

I'm certainly not an expert at reading logs, but comparing yours to mine (custom "stage 2" map, mods as listed in my sig), your boost looks quite low.
You'll need to zoom in to the 2.5k RPM 3rd gear pulls to see details more, but if you check out https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5f0e...90c66591bb7f30 you can see your boost is running about 4 PSI lower throughout.

I'm no expert tuner, so take this with a grain of salt....
Manifold boost pressure is rather low for a custom tune. The stock turbo should be capable of much higher boost. This is confirmed by your wastegate duty cycle sitting in the 70's and 80's and the throttle closures (i.e. not 100% throttle so effectively not all of the boost is making it's way from the turbo to the manifold). Your HPFP pressure is struggling to keep up. I'm not sure if this is cause or effect. I.e. perhaps the tuner has intentionally pulled back a couple of things because of the HPFP pressure or if the tune being a bit on the rich side is stressing out your HPFP. I suspect it's more a case of the HPFP being weak which is a common issue with these cars when you start tuning, especially with higher octane fuels. Look into the Dorch HPFP upgrades. |

Each car is a little different but in terms of target boost for a N55 custom tunes are usually around 18.5-19.5 with stock fuel. Based off this log your 2-3.0 PSI lower....

Curious, whats your elevation?
I agree with the above. Boost seems very low compared to most other N55 logs I've seen on the stock turbo. Your timing is impeccable, but that honestly could be because the car isn't exactly being "pushed" with boost. One thing I do notice is your HPFP is struggling through the mid range (fuel pressure). I'm wondering if this is just a tuning issue (AFR richness) or if your HPFP is literally about to tap out and is failing (less likely). Looking at other N55 logs for this platform I see them running much more aggressively and their fuel pressure doesn't dip nearly as bad, they also run much more boost with a little more conservative timing. The two sides for less timing with more boost vs. more timing with less boost can be argued till the cows come home. Everyone has their own opinion on the subject, and its literally just two different ways to make power - both with their own benefits and drawbacks.

Thanks for the comments so far.
My elevation is: −3 m (−10 ft) It's around 22 degrees celsius right now. These logs are with BP Ultimate RON98 (93 OCT) fuel. Previous logs were with RON102 fuel, I don't have access to that a.t.m. Did some more logs today. Two longer ones on the highway: https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5f4f...0b43254378a675 https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5f4f...729b1fe6125501 One 3rd gear pull from 2.5k to redline: https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5f4f...0b43254378a67a On the last logs I see a couple 'knock' events.. |

Hmm, definitely don't think elevation is the issue then. I figured maybe if you were higher in elevation that the lower boost target might make sense. Definitely a very "mild" tune compared to what some people are running, but it also looks like you're running very rich through the mid range would could be leading to your HPFP dropping pressure into the low 2000 range, and sometimes high 1800-1900 psi. That being said, maybe your tuner tried to increase the boost and your octane doesn't support it. Just looking at how clean the timing is though... I find it hard to believe there's not more left in this car.

I want to have some background on what can be improved before I go there since I have to physically go to their site.
Now I know that I can ask them to look at the richness, among other things. |

Any tuner worth their salt should be able to look at logs and see what's going on. You shouldn't have to point them in the right direction. What's more disturbing is that they tuned it on a dyno and let it go like that. I would be apprehensive to go back.
