Michelin Pilot Sport 4S RFT a good choice?

So the dealership just told me the OEM Bridgestone Turanza L100A tires are pretty much done although I suspect I can get a few more months out of them. Dealer told me 1800 bucks for tires and 200 for alignment which was crazy. Looking for replacements soon though.

Do you think the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S ZP RFT would be a good choice? They're also significantly cheaper than the Bridgesones.

Dumb question but since it most likely has a lot more traction, it would slow down the car, especially considering its only a 2 litre turbo? Any experience with these tires in cold weather? I live in Georgia and it doesn't really snow much but gets really cold.

PS4S ZPs are one of the best run flat tires you can get. But you should still get the go-flat version, they'll be much better handling, less harsh over bumps, and cheaper.

4S are good down to 40F. Under that and you should not drive on them, not only will the traction be poor, the cold turns the rubber brittle and will wear your tires faster.

Well it's a lease and I don't wanna worry about potential nagging from BMW. Also, there's no room for a spare tire. I'd lose the trunk space.

So I just checked online, apparently sometimes in winter it can get down to 25ish fahrenheit. If it's not good below 40, what's the next best option? I'd wanna say no to Pirelli just because my old car had the P Zero Rosso's and, while I loved them, I used to get a ton of punctures.

If you don’t want to swap to winter tires, you need to consider an all season tire then. But keep in mind any all season tire is a jack of all trades, but a master of none. It won’t be as good as a summer tire in the summer and it won’t be as good as a winter tire in the winter.

I mean ideally I'd want a summer tire like the michelin pilot sport, but one that can handle just a little more than 40 degrees

You also said your winters get down to below freezing. That’s not summer tire weather. Any summer tire that’s actually a summer tire, and not some rebadged high performance all season, is going to have the same temperature ratings.

Here are some more detailed thoughts:

Your car currently has a grand touring all season run flat tire, based on your first post. Given it's a lease, you will need to return the car with an all season run flat tire. You cannot return the car with any summer tire, run flat or not. If you do, you will be dinged for the price of a full set of new tires, at whatever marked up rate they decide. Assuming you think you may return the car with the next set of tires on it, you should stick with an all season run flat.

Even if that makes no difference to you, given everything you have said, in your case I would still stick with an all season run flat. You likely don't have a spare tire, so I would keep a run flat set, and summer tires in cold temps can still be dangerous.

That being said, given you have a grand touring run flat, you could step up to a high performance run flat, assuming BMW has not further restricted the lease turn in guidance (you would need to double check that, I doubt it's an issue, but I have not looked recently). There are plenty of good high performance all season options but, remember, a high performance all season tire will have more road noise than a grand touring tire. Essentially, part of a grand touring tire's tread design is to lessen road noise (howling or humming or the like). A high performance all season tread is geared more towards grip, with less emphasis on road noise, ergo it is louder. Some people don't mind or don't notice, some people are bothered by it.

My last suggestion is to avoid the dealer for tires. Their prices are sky high and you do not need to use them, even for a leased vehicle. Spend some time on Tirerack.com looking at tires that fit; there are plenty of reviews and comparisons to help you decide. You can order the tires from tire rack and have them sent to an authorized installer directly. You then go to that authorized tire shop and they will mount and balance the new tires for you.

So I spoke to the dealer and they said I can choose any run flat tire that has the "star" logo on the sidewall which means its BMW approved. However, because I know how dealers can be. I'm gonna email them the information so I can have an email confirmation that they told me its ok. So they can't come to me and tell me its not an approved tire when I turn it in at the end of the lease.

Spend the $ on a dedicated quality set of summer and winter tires and then return your lease with the RFT it came equipped with.

That's what I'm doing

So I was actually gonna do that but this was my first lease and I didnt know what to expect and everyone was telling me they'll penalize you for not using the same tire. My theory is that, if the first tires only last me 18K, then even if I get another tire now, I'll have to be replacing them again before I turn in the car. I get 15K a year. So I guess I might as well choose a tire I'll enjoy. Sucks that there's not too many RFT options in the market for 225/45R18.

So I found that if I go 5mm lower on the wheel height, I have more options. Im looking at the Michelin PRIMACY MXM4 ZP. Anyone have experience with them? How's the driving performance? Cornering? Braking?

Any effects going for a shorter height tire? Speed? Handling? Acceleration? etc....
