The Good, The Bad, and The Fun

During a tech inspection, my shop discovered a slit in the inside sidewall of a rear tire, thru to the cords. With 8k miles on them, I replaced both rears. Fortunately Discount Tire had a pair in town and they were installed the next morning.

But that means I'll be on PSS for a while longer and not switching to PS4S or any larger sizes.

The very next day I headed to the BMW Performance Center and with 100 miles on the new tires, I did an autocross day with the Sandlapper chapter BMW CCA.

Here is a fun run. Check out the big slide at 00:24.

I was in MDM mode which may have helped save it.
My best time was an 89.2 I think a personal best on the course.

Hey Richard, sorry I missed you yesterday. I ran in the morning session and had a great time too.

Your sidewall damage made me smile actually (sadly). We were about 10 minutes from home which is in a rural area of Greenville county, and got a TPMS warning about a month ago. The inside of the left rear tire was hissing out its air slowly. I had my "to go" BMW jack kit in the car, so off with the wheel only for us to find nasty treadblock and sidewall damage...something the M-mobility stuff would never fill (not that I would ever use that junk anyway).

I had a pump and plug kit with us too, but once reinflated, the entire area leaking was through the sidewall damage. Since I had the plug kit with vulcanizing cement, my wife and I decided to do what you never do...plug the sidewall with two tire plugs. We only needed it to hold for a slow (all rural backroads) 10 minute ride, so it was worth a shot. After letting it cure for about 15 min, we added air and it held. We made it home slowly with the TPMS display being monitored the whole way.

We've had the autox wheels and RE71Rs on the car since then, but I'm planning on PS4S and then selling the two front PSS (they have about 8/32s on them, 10k miles since new). My other option is to swap over the PS4S off my M3 and buy some Cup2-240 tires for the M3 which I'm pondering.

Another interesting sidewall story...I was talking with someone at the event yesterday who had just bought a set of Cup2s, took them out for a break-in drive prior to yesterday, and came home with a screw in the rear tire sidewall ruining his plans to use them yesterday. I'm sick of sidewall damage stories at this point.

Richard, did you keep the other rear tire that wasn't damaged by chance? I'm looking for a singlet rear to complete a set of tires to use on my M3 for the upcoming skipdad event.

Unfortunately not. Although that would have been smart to keep as a spare in the garage....
