Question Need help with gas filler door security

Just bought a 2005 M3 and discovered that the gas door will not close properly because the plunger has been pushed like it was manually activated. Does anyone know how to get this plunger to the extended position so the mechanism will operate normally?

the gas door lock plunger should extend simultaneously by pressing the key fob to lock the car.
