New BMW Scent

When I received a brand new loaner last time I brought my 2019 G05 in for service, I was reminded that BMW's have a unique new car scent.

Has anyone found a product that replicates that unique scent closely? I've tried genuine leather scents in the past, but it's different than that alone.

Wondering if the BMW Odor Remover removes odors and restores the new car smell at the same time, if anyone has tried it.

Most “new car scents” are actually kind of toxic and consist mainly of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Materials that off gas include adhesives, plastics and flame retardants, among other not-so-pleasant materials.

Does it smell nice? I guess so. Smelled alone and these VOCs probably wouldn’t smell very nice, but since it’s associated with something new and shiny, our brains tend to make it smell better than it really it. It’s similar to antifreeze tasting sweet: it’s deceiving, although not as deadly.

Is that still really true? if so, wouldn't there be a higher incidence of disease amongst factory workers that build cars? I know there's higher incidences of certain diseases by working in manufactering alone but can it be attributable to this alone?

Ive found buying a new car every year works great for keeping the new car smell

BMW products are not bad, they do work, however from what I experienced its pretty hard to come close to that new car smell and like new car smell whatever you spray you just get use to it and dont notice it, so you keep spraying it and then when someone else gets in the car they are overwhelmed with the scent.

Steve Jobs found a loophole to not have a front license plate on his Mercedes cars by leasing his cars for 6 months just before the temporary tags expire and then leasing another new car. He ended up getting cancer. Coincidence? Who knows. But inhaling those toxins constantly couldn't be good.

Why are all those egotistical maniacs so obsessed with not having front license plates when using public roads and not wearing face masks when being in public places?

To be fair, in CA they're only technically the law but not in practice - basically nobody has them and I've been driving for 10 years here without one and never been cited - I've been pulled over a bunch and gotten a bunch of parking tickets ... but never been cited for no front plate.

I was pulled over for having my euro plate on the rear before my CA plates came in, but that was because it was new deputy and he didn't know it was legal.

Why would you not want to display your front license plate when that is the law?

I didn’t mean to scare people; I just wanted people to know what that smell really is. However, I certainly wouldn’t hold your breath or don a respirator while driving as it’s not necessary.

There aren’t many products that I’m aware of that can truly replicate the myriad of VOCs that constitute the “new-car scent.” Even if you can find a product, your nose usually gets numb to it before it actually goes away.

Just enjoy it while you can and breathe a sigh of relief after your car finally gasses everything away...
