235/35/19 Front tyres

Hi there,

Looking at buying some additional wheels for track usage and have been looking into track day tyres. I’ve previously used Federal 595 RSR tyres on a different car and they were really good ok track for the money.

Unfortunately they only make the Federal for fronts in 235/35 or 255/35 (plus a 265/35 which I can use on the rear).

Anybody tried a 235 on the front? Did you lose a significant amount of grip? I’ve looked into 255 but need to avoid any rubbing and as on track the car will being driven hard. For info the track wheels I’m looking at are are 8.5J Et20 fronts.

I believe the 235 is a valid tyre size for these cars based on sticker in driver door.

Any insight would be much appreciated

If you are locked into that wheel size and offset, 235 will work fine. It's a good width for an 8.5" rim.

Is a 9" wide rim an option for you? With the right offset, a 255 works on the front with no rubbing easily.

You really want more width in the front. I'd suggest looking for another set of wheels. ET20 is also going to stick out pretty far.

Also, get the Federal RSR-R's, not just the regular RSR's. they're better tires.

I run a square setup with Apex EC-7 18x10 ET35 wheels wrapped in Federal RSR-R 265/35r18 tires. This setup does require camber plates and wheel spacers to run. I have 12mm spacers on the front, and 5mm in the rear just to even them out. If you go with ET25 apex wheels, you may not even need spacers at all (if you do, it'll be like 5mm or so).

Currently running a 235/35/19 Cup 2 at the front off a previous vehicle. Turns in just fine.

8.5 wide wheel with ET20 sticks out 2-3mm farther than stock Considering that I run 15mm spacers in the front (so effectively 9 inch wheel with ET14) I'd say OP is gonna be fine.

That said I would also go for more rubber in the front for the track. I haven't heard of anyone having issues with 255/35/19

I'm running 595 RSR Pro 265/35 front and 275/35 rear on 437m wheels. 265 is a tight fit in front (lowered with camber plates). I will go down to 255 fronts next time with 275 rear (widest they make in 19 inch, measured at 285).

All that said I wouldn't run 235 federals if you're going to track the car. Might be ok if it's just for street (I still wouldn't)
