I was in the ATC as a youth and saw them at Duxford and Leuchars. The sound of a Merlin doesn’t half make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

It does , when i worked at RR Hillington we still had two test beds capable of testing the Merlins. It was our job as millwrights to set up the beds prior to them being delivered for testing. Standing next to one as it warmed up , without silencers, was an absolute privilege.

If i could turn back time i would have purchased all the engine spares when the closed the testbeds , i would have been able to retire by now on the proceeds.

I remember making ashtrays from Merlin pistons and prybars from the engine studs as there were spares lying around everywhere in A Block.

I did the Duxford Dash 5km run up and down the runway last Sunday! I wish our roads were that smooth - we're about 5 miles away so normally get treated regularly to the Spitfires overhead

Unfortunately I have a meeting at 2.30 so can't get up to Hairmyres & back in time

Fortunately the flight path from Paisley to EK crosses the golf course at the back of my house, so as long as he's at a decently low altitude I should get a good view

Bit of an anticlimax - was further south than the flightpath suggested, but you could still hear it

We had a Spitfire flypast down my neck of the woods in May on VE day over the Queen Victoria in East Grinsted.

I was lucky enough to get a good view of it.

That sound from the engine gave me goosebumps. There is something about this aircraft that just evokes real emotion.

It also reminds me of the 80s when my dad uses to take me to the airshows at Biggen Hill. Used to love going there as a boy, good times.

Living near some white cliffs on the South coast, we have been hearing the Merlin sound then seeing a Spitfire almost daily for weeks now. Seems to be a regular route for a two seat version for paying punters. Not sure if it might be coming out of Goodwood, but either way it's going on my bucket list.

Im lucky enough to live in the flight path of RAF Coningsby, home of the BBMF. it still sends a shiver down the spine when we see the spitfire, hurricane and lancaster fly over. In a normal summer it was every weekend.
