Rpm goes up while on park

Hi
Wondering if anyone have the same issue as me. I just turned on my car and on park for 5-10mins then all of sudden the rpm went to nearly 1000x rpm and it stays there for a while then I shut the engine off. And it's back to normal. Let me know if anyone notice it

Only when checking the Oil measurement, at no other time, sorry I can't think why otherwise that this happens, maybe whilst you experience the RPM increasing go and and check if this is happening in Idrive, sounds stupid but there may be a glitch

Why should you run in idle for 10 minutes while in park?

It just does it while on park, planning to take it to the dealership in a couple weeks

Are you not worrying unduly? 1,000 rpm is not particularly high. Everything is software controlled. After an extended period of idling (no moving air for cooling) it’s likely the electric fan will operate; maybe a few extra revs are required for the alternator to maintain battery charge.

Raised rpm idle has been a function of BMW cars for at least 20-years.

AC and energy management, can use extra rpm to function correctly. Can depend on electrical load and battery SoC, as you idle. Alternator may simply not be keeping up with demand on prolonged idle, without increasing rpm.

A function of Idle Speed Control...

The set engine speed when idling depends on different conditions, for example coolant temperature or power requirement of the auxiliary components.

Good question. Maybe all of our vehicles do it, but who would sit around with the car idling for 10 minutes to find out?

You could simply turn the motor off. If it's warm, lower the windows.

Running in idle while parked is illegal in Germany and will be sued with a fine of at least €80,-
