I could be wrong but I don't think it's a safety feature. My last Mercedes had it as well and you could turn it on or off through the settings.

it is a safety feature. I picked ours up at the PCD, and they drilled us on emergency braking and not only did the anti-lock brakes work as they should, but so did the seat belt tensioners to keep you from slapping your upper torso into the dashboard/airbag assembly. I, for one, am glad this feature exists, and there should be no earthly reason for BMW to give anyone an option to disable a *safety* feature.

The "tug tug" that the seatbelt does when you've driven a bit, is a feature, that if turned off, wouldn't shut the whole "safety" tensioning off. Like I said, you could disable the feature of it doing that in my Mercedes. If you gave the belt a quick pull the tensioner still works, just the couple of tugs it gave when starting to drive was disabled.
Personally I don't mind it, other than it choking me on occasion. My wife is 5'7", 130ish lbs, she hates it. |

My 2015 X5 had the self-tightening when I bought it but it turned itself off after a few DIY coding sessions 🙂 I'm trying to figure which function this is in the ACSM module, I think it's the Automatenstrammer_Fahrer in CAFD3000 but playing with it does nothing...
