M4 vs 840i

I don't know quite how I got this idea into my head. I've been looking at the new M4 forever and coming off 2 previous M4's. I drove an M8 at the M Track days and that was the first time I had seen an 8 in person. I pictured them being much larger, like way overly too large. Instead they are a sexy, sleek, svelte sport coupe, a look that the G82 seems to be hinting at and reaching for, but doesn't quite get there. The front is certainly an improvement over the new M4 grilles, even though they are growing on me.

So for the heck of it I decided to do some basic price comparisons. A G82 would be about 80K with minimal if any discounts and a $500 BMWCCA rebate. The 840 is $100k with much more discount room, currently $3k loyalty and $1500 back from BMWCCA. I was paying about $1k/month for my current M4 (recently bought out my lease) after putting several thousand down (I know you shouldn't on a lease, but I did). I got an early ballpark quote on a 10k/year 840 lease at about $1200/month. I'm guessing that the new M4 is going to cost over 1k/month.

Plan is for a PCD around April 1st so I can drive it home after the winter weather is gone. I'll have to see how the deals are come January, but I'm considering it. I obviously get a smaller engine and a larger car, but it's never going to see a track and having seen the 8 in person it's a damn sexy car, where as the M4 will have to still grow on me a bit which I hate for that amount of money.

Now if only I could get it in Laguna Seca blue...

Anyone else consider something similar?

To be fair, I think you drove the M8 competition, which is not the 840i. The car you drove MSRP's for in the $140's. I'd be sure to drive an 840i before you commit to a 3 yr lease. Also, from my understanding, they are only building the 8 series in the 4 dr coupe now.

You are showing a picture of an M8 and considering a 840i.

An 840 is a GT. It'll be a completely different driving dynamics.

I just put that picture there because I love the color. I get that it's a different car.

Yes, you are correct with what I drove. I know it will be a different car. I'm hoping to try and drive one at some point. They are no longer making the M8 coupe but still seem to be making the 840 coupe.

A base 840i MSport is $95K without any options. Unless you are looking for a GT, the M4 is a much better buy.

You should never have to buy a car that needs to grow on you.

The one I speced and got a rough quote on was right about 100k. Discounted down to 90k. I need to go drive one.

840i? Absolutely not if you ask me. You can get a lightly optioned M5 for just about the same coin. The M5 is a top dog in its segment the 840i the runt of the litter.

Nah, I have no need or desire for 4 doors. I'll keep getting coupes until all the automakers in the world finally stop making them and it seems to be sliding in that direction.

It could have eight doors and still be the better option...
The internals and value of those two cars are in different dimensions.
