Is this a fair price for labor??

Curious to know if you guys would pay this much for a new valve cover and multiple coolant lines replaced. I think the labor price was very fair but the parts being genuine bmw were very expensive (obviously they marked them up I could've got them cheaper and done it myself but I currently don't have a garage and this shop replaced my water pump and did good work)

I pay 115 for labor and the shop will let me pick if I want OEM or OE replacements. I would ask for OE parts instead

At nearly $600 for a valve cover I'd get an aluminum one instead

The labor I'd say is fair, in my opinion but to each his own

I'd say that you'd get the parts through FCP on your own for the lifetime warranty, I'm sure they'd understand due to that reason

Depends on the shop. Some are cool with you supplying your own and others refuse. Mostly imo it’s shops that do strictly repairs vs a shop willing to mod your car that will refuse to use self supplied parts

I can understand why they would be against it as you can supply the wrong part making the job a headache

Had that happen before, luckily the shop I go to has folks who are kind and patient with me

+1 for Bimmeronly in Fremont, CA (gotta give my boys a shout-out)

Vargas makes one at a reasonable price rate, at around $600

Everything else I've seen is double that price, or at least $1000 plus

This is for N54 as that is what I have, but I'm sure other can be found

Can you still install the engine cover with the Vargas VC?

Too bad they don't mention in the description that they recommend you lather the inside of the cover with some type of silicone sealant/gasket maker so that you don't potentially have oil seepage through the casting.......

Yup, there's a few posts around a couple forums about it, and that's VTT's recommendation when installing from what I saw of their replies.

Correct, I was just making a statement earlier in the beginning of the post about $600 for a plastic one you might as well go aluminum

Then I mentioned you might as well go fcpeuro for lifetime warranty so the shop doesn't argue the fact of you bringing your own part

Lastly someone asked about aluminum covers and I linked what I'm familiar with, the N54 platform, just to give reference for the n52 folks

Only option for metal cover for n52 is the 06 model cars but you'll have to switch the pcv system to the one that's under the intake manifold. I suppose labor is okay if you go by alldata or whatever the newest overcharging money grab quote system is being implemented by shops now. I personally think it's absolutely outrageous to pay 1300 to have a valve cover done when I did mine for 50 but to each their own..

I think it's outrageous as well especially since they didn't put my car back together correctly causing a leak (see my other thread)
