MB C63 tire smoking advert: poor timing?

Is it just me? Or does the juxtaposition of the latest MB ad, with 3 C63s burning rubber, next to T. Boone Pickens' ad about alternative energy, and other "green" ads, seem a tad out of touch?

Oh, if only BMW could counter with an ad touting the E90 320d and 50mpg ... Pardon my grinding salt into that wound, but I am not ready to let the powers that be at BMW AG / NA forget their lack of foresight on that one.

I would rather burn rubber than get 50mpg - having both would be ideal, but I would take the power over the economy still!

I think it's an appropriate ad for the audience it's targeting. Now if you are talking about how the brand portrays itself then I would say that MB always had an identity crisis. From one side they try to come off as a luxury high end brand, and then as a sports car brand, and now as a muscle car brand.

...but for me MB will always symbolize a 50 year old proctologist. Most MB drivers I came across I didn't like as people. I hate to generalize like that. That said a lot of BMW drivers I meet I don't like either, but at least with BMW I get qualities I like in a car.

I'm kind of sick of the MPG commercials.... Like the carmakers expect people to make decisions based solely on MPG figures. Gas mileage is a factor to everyone, and a bigger factor than normal now that gas is going up and may continue to go up for a while, but there's so much to a car that can offset MPG benefits. Like, I dunno.... crappy quality or a car that hurts your eyes to even look at...

+1. If it was a Toyota Camry smoking the tires, that would be another story.

I think the only way to make a Toyota Camry smoke its tires is to put it on a BBQ

Regarding the original post, I agree with noro. "I think it's an appropriate ad for the audience it's targeting".

If you are spending 60K or so on a high performance car and are worried about not being able to afford the gas, then you should probably reconsider your choice.

We're gonna need you to put your hand in your pants and feel around for a pair of balls. If you don't find them there then check you wife's purse and ask her if you can borrow them, then watch the commercial again.
