Opinions on Cayman S?

So I may be giving my 328i to my parents who pretty much need a reliable car (their cars are over 10+ years old). Although it pains me to do so, I know it's the right thing to do because I know they can't afford a new car (mine is a 2008).

I was thinking of my potential replacements based on my budget. I was looking at the Cayman S. I really like the look, and I want to test drive it when I get time off this weekend.

However, anyone have real world experience owning a Porsche? Mechanical problems, cost to maintain, other weird funky stuff?

my dad has a 2007 cayman S
its an aswesome car for the money and is deff fastt
he bought it last june and only had to get his front brake pads replaced ($300), other then that its a great car! !

They're not the cheapest to maintain, but they're not outrageous either. Porsche makes arguably the most reliable sports cars you can buy. Personally I thihk the Cayman S is a great car - I'd say go for it!

Hmm, $300 brake pads, seems kind of steep but I guess that's just COO.

I really need to schedule a test drive.

I had the pleasure to test drive one during the summer; overall it felt great, it drove like it was on rails. I really enjoyed the test drive. Get great gas mileage as well (about 26-28mpg highway).

I like them alot, drove an S once. Im a bigger guy and it fit toooo much like a snugg glove. A couple inches here or there would have been nice.

Plus it has alot of storage room, a shelf in the back, and the whole front trunk area.

plus i think it has built in rails on the roof for a rack,, just like the 3 series do.

But i think price wise,, your within 7-10 grand of a used 911.

i test drove that cayman S and the M coupe back to back

both awesome cars, but i felt like i got more bang for buck with the M

the cayman s does drive extremely nice tho

I'm not a big fan of the M Coupe's looks. Not that looks are the most important factor but it's a very big one when buying a $70,000 car.

i hear ya...the m coupe isnt for everyone...and i wouldnt pay 70k for it either haha

the drive is what got me to buy the M coupe...not that there is anything wrong with the cayman....its just the M caught my attention more.

Hmm. Do you mean on used models or even brand new models?

What kind of financing/price would you be looking for on a Cayman S?

I mean new, but used also. In general, you can find obscene deals on $50k+ cars right now... Check the M3 forums, people are getting 1k UNDER invoice on new M3s... My local dealer has 12! of them sitting on the lot. I might have to go check one out, if they could get me into an E92 M3 for 50 grand, I might be tempted to trade in the 1er, heh.

Check out Autotrader, or look around on BMW/Porsche forums. There are good deals to be had, and honestly, I expect the DOW to be ~7k within a month. At that point, the deals should be even better.

Yea, many expensive sport cars are taking a big hit. A great friend of mine just bought an '08 Vette w/ Z51 package and he got it out the door for 43k. Insane price if you ask me.

Looks are hugely important to me - I'd hate spending money on something if I didn't like the looks. I also think the M Coupe offers more bang for the buck, but if you don't like the looks give it a pass.

The Cayman I test drove reminded me of my old 944 - handling so good you almost don't notice it's not that fast.

I test drove the Cayman S before buying the 335i. The decision for me was based on the moddability of the turbo engine plus more cargo room. The Porsche was a great car and a great ride it just wasn't practical enough for my purposes.

That is a beautiful car, but I'm really set on getting a dark slate/gray color, or white. I'm just not sure.

Anyway today I'm going to test drive the Cayman S in Newport Beach. But a coworker told me something interesting today. He said that the new Cayman S for 2009 is going to be a monster and that I should just wait 3 months so that I can order one of those instead.

He showed me the newest issue of MotorTrend and basically here are the upgrades for 2009.

HP: Bumped from 295 to 320
Torque: Bumped to 275
New Performance Features: DFI, PDK and LSD all included.

Here's some spy shots I found on another website of the 2009 with very minimal camo on it.

I like the front view. It looks like they stole a lot from the new Carrera GT3 for the front end, though I think the rear lights may be too feminine for me. I guess I'll have to see it in person to see if I really like it. I remember thinking the 135i was kind of ugly when I saw the pictures. But after seeing it in person, I didn't think it was ugly at all.
