Screech when getting into car with parking brake on?

One of those casual things I have been meaning to ask about forever. Both of my BMWs do it - get into the drivers seat with the parking brake on and there is a short metallic screech sound from the rear. The suspension compressing is obviously moving something that probably needs a dab of lubrication. Or maybe it's the car telling me I need to lose some weight...

The wagon is going to need rear brakes next summer when I am back in Maine, so figured I might as well deal with whatever this is at the same time. Similarly, I'm about to put together my new QuickJack at my place in FL and rotate the tires on my convertible, so no better time for that one.

Figured someone must have BTDT with this.

Sounds like a squeaky bushing, there was one in particular that seems to cause squeaking you describe.

I had my shop do it a couple years ago now.. I'm guessing it was the rear lower control arm. I'm not sure if it was a press job or not.

Drives you nuts doesn't it? It just doesn't go away...

Seems unlikely to be a bushing - it only does it with the parking brake on. So more likely to be something with the cables for that.

Also, both cars are only at ~50K miles. I've had the wagon from new, and it has done this for as long as I can remember.

I know this squeak you're talking about, I have two E90s and they both do this. It's not a bushing, but is likely caused by the edges of the parking brake shoes rubbing against the hub. It's definitely from the parking brake shoes and not a suspension bushing.

I can't find the post but there's one around here somewhere which outlines the fix, which is just applying some grease to the ears.

Thanks! I'll search around too - haven't had much luck with it so far, but shoes gives me another term to try that I haven't yet.

Just the parking brake shoes moving on the backing plates. Normal. You can try lubricating the contact points where the shoes touch the backing plates, and where the shoes make contact with the pivot points using brake pad paste. Will help reduce the noise. But no real need to worry about it.

I'm definitely not worried about it in any way - just annoyed by it!

But easy enough to fix, especially on the wagon that is getting new rotors anyway, and needs the parking brake adjusted anyway. It's MUCH louder on that car than the convertible, but they both do it.

I'll report back after I have a look. Just waiting for the garage to cool off before I start putting my Quickjack together. Might have to wait until after Eta rolls past though - starting to look a bit dark outside, and I don't have room in my tiny garage to actually USE the thing.
