Random post but I've been trying for years to kill off the ivy behind my garage, I even asked on here as I couldn't find anything that would get rid it just kept coming back.

My neighbour recommended this stuff and it's absolutely unreal it's literally killed off everything behind the garage and I've tried all kinds of stuff in the past including fire

It's all now just brittle twigs and the stuff the neighbour has killed off a couple of years ago is now nonexistent!

When did you apply it? With normal weeds it's supposed to be when they are growing but I have weeds between the joints of concrete slabs which keep coming back and I'd realy like to get them for good. Or is this for plants as opposed to weeds?

I sprayed it using one of those spray guns that attaches to the container to get good coverage. I did the first go at the end of August and again middle of October.

Only used about half, plus I sprayed the weeds on my drive and rock feature and nothing has survived there either!

Did I not recommend Gallup previously? Must have missed your thread. It's great stuff.

I've got one of those containers that mixes it with water, pump for pressure and then apply with a trigger nozzle. Even diluted, this knocks out everything. Marvellous.

Its a glyphosate based product, very much like Roundup from Monsanto. Barclay are a generics copycat from what I can remember so you might find similar form other suppliers. The strength of this appears to be that it is up to 60% active ingredient, whereas Roundup is only about 35% (and a different derivative salt, not that that makes much difference to efficacy).

There have been a number of health concerns raised over widespread use of glyphosate and glyphosate based products, though these have largely been dismissed to date.

I used to do a lot of contract R&D on these types of formulation, and to be fair, as herbicides they're very good. I think I even did the work on this particular product as the name rings a bell.

Top tip: ensure you get good coverage of the leaves, as this is how the plants take it in, and don't use in direct sunlight, where the water/solvent may dry before the product is metabolised by the plant. This works as a systemic herbicide, so the plant produces a toxic metabolite through photosynthesis rather than the usual good stuff (iirc - I work in another industry entirely these days).

Basically:

1. You might get something similar if you can't find this stuff. Check content is up to 60%

2. It might make you ill, but probably not.

3. Get it on the leaves when it's dry, but not too hot or sunny.

Roger!

Sound advice on steps 1 & 2 as this is what I did! Sprayed from a good 3 - 4m away!

It's fucking brutal for plants. I had issues in a previous property and this stuff on a long spray arm killed LOADS of stuff.

Its basically the same active ingredient as in most of the weed killers but you can have it far far far stronger.

A weed is a plant in the wrong place.
Weedkillers should really be called plantkillers. Don't get this stuff near your prize chrysanthemums.

Thank god for predictive text!

For things to grow between slabs they need nutrients. Once you've killed stuff and it's dry and warm, rake out the joints and brush kiln dried sand into the joints to prevent organic matter getting in which seeds can germinate in.

Strangely, just reading your other "I have an addiction to Amazon" thread and this guy mentioned this stuff to you back then in post 8

You could have fixed this issue 2.5 years ago.

Well spotted!

I was using the roundup, if I remember it seemed to be working but the bloody stuff came back again with a vengeance, I'm hoping it's done for this time!

Great product. I run a small garden maintenance company and discovered this about 4 years ago. Just be especially careful when applying, windy days can carry the spray quite a distance which could cause issues with your neighbours . I have used it on all sorts of problem weeds and only occasionally does it need a second application.

Is this stuff any good for controlling Marestail? We have a field out of the back of us that's got some of that in it and when it grows through/under the fence into our back border it's a real pain to get rid of!

Thanks for the recommendation, Broncho.
I've used a product called SBK for years now, heavy duty stuff which will treat anything from brushwood to tree stumps. Pricey but very effective.

I'm using SBK as well, just done the second spray of the grass areas, which are about 50% grass and 50% other stuff that I don't want!! It's particularly effective on dandelions.

So SBK leaves grass untouched?
