adding 5w-60 oil to 335i

2012 335i F30

The last oil change I did on this car was about 1/2 a quart low around 4000 miles into oil change or so. I usually change out at 5000 miles and normall 5w-40 liquid moly oil.

I'm planning on experimenting with some thicker weight oil close to springtime. Since I can't find much 50 weight oil, I plan on using a quart or two of 5w-60 instead of 40 weight. So instead of 6.5 liters of 5w-40 will be like 5 liters of 5w-40 and 1.5 liters of 60 weight.

I'm hoping that this will reduce some of the oil burning. Has anyone tried this?

I can't imagine using oil that heavy, but in Vegas it may be worthwhile.

Thanks. That stuff is even more expensive than Liquid Moly.

Its a street-track oil but fine if you change every 5000.

Yes, warmer temps. I don't think need full 60 weight oil but if its diluted with the 40 weight shouldn't be too thick I figure and maybe oil consumption will go down slightly.

I am not clear what you're trying to do here. You're going to cause more harm than good. Dont mix oils. That is for certain worse than running a good 40 weight. The motor is not spec'd for 60..... or 50

I think 60 weight is too thin. Try using gear/differential oil. That is spec'd for something like 75w-140.

Another option is a high mileage oil, like this: https://www.castrol.com/en_us/united...xoCUQEQAvD_BwE

I would think the 20w-50 would do the trick. 20w isn't going to cause hard starting where the OP lives by any means.

Thanks but it says synthetic blend not full synthetic. I've always been under the impression that blends are not as good as full synthetic.

I bet with some searching you could find a high mileage full synthetic as well.

Yes, but I don't have any evidence that the "high mileage" marketing is nothing more than that. The weight thickness is definitive unlike the "high mileage" designation.

I've watched lots of oil review videos and have never seen something showing that such marketing results in better lubrication or performance.

High mileage oil is just a different blend and has additives for seals. Its worth a try if you are worried about losing 1/2 qt every change cycle. Thats not alot of oil consumption to me for a 10 year old car. For my older cars, I use AT-205 if they are consuming oil and it works. I don't like to mess around with oil for my BMWs though and so for your car I would throw in a cycle of Motul Sport 5W-40 before going crazy with higher weights or sealants.
